Wife got a works laptop before she left, got told to keep it as its too old. I want to install Linux on it.

When you start it up it comes up with all the work bumf and asks you for user name and password (which we dont have) How do I wipe it to install Linux from a usb drive? (got the install part worked out, its just the wiping it bit that has me stumped)

You don’t have to wipe it, you just need to change the BIOS settings to allow it to boot from USB.

If you have a linux install on a usb stick? If not does it have a cd drive?
Once you have booted the Linux install from the usb stick or cdrom, the installation will wipe the disk.

Linux off a stick, boot it from there. Never look back.

AS the others have said, boot off the new OS media and flatten it.
