I'd like to create security groups etc using ":" colons although Windows AD kicks it back as colons and a number of other characters aren't allowed. There must be fudge for this? Any one any ideas?

No fudge avalable. You cannot use reserved characters for object names anywhere in AD or Filesystems under NTFS or FAT

Try escaping the character…

Why do you want to use a colon? If special characters aren't allowed, they're not allowed. Can you use the "pipe" symbol instead? That's "|"

Doubt it (just use underscores :p ) and even if you did find a fudge would you really have any faith doing schema updates etc. in future that could go horribly wrong thanks to the fudge?

Nah your post is very good info but, tbh it's best to just avoid using odd characters, if you need to start escaping something to use it then you'll end up in a pool of shite sometime in the future.
Best to implement a sensible naming convention from day 1 using standard characters, of course if your doing a migration then you can't always do this but there comes a time when it's safer to scrap than to bodge!
