I’m trying to buy some hardwood board, it needs to be about 300mm wide

How thick? What sort of hardwood? Where are you?

Also solid or block laminated? And what hardwood or will anything do? You should be able to get 300mm wide generic hardwoods (American oak probably) from your local timber merchant. I’d start there – give them a call and see what they have.

I’m guessing around 20mm thick

I’d rather solid than laminated, but if solid is a no go then laminated wouldn’t be the end of the world

As for what kind of wood, I’ve been looking at European Oak, Cherry, Ash, Maple, Walnut. Colour and workability are not that important as long as I can get a good final finish

300mm wide but only 20mm thick and one board won’t stay flat. It’ll cup.

They can join narrower boards for you (as can any joiner and many timber yards), so the board will stay pretty stable. Their quality is second to none, although they are pricey. Delivery is about 3 weeks. If I need hardwood and they stock it, I don’t bother going anywhere else. In the ten years I used them, and a good few thousand quid’s worth, only a handfull of boards have been sub par, and these were replaced in a couple of days – no questions asked.

300 mm wide may be hard to get hold of. Plus as above, it would need to be a very stable board not to cup at that thickness. Hardwood plywood might be a good choice depending on what you’re doing. Plus it tends to be cheaper. Birch ply is about £90 for 8×4 foot sheet.

If you want boards I would look locally for a timber merchant. Then it’s a case of taking the day off work to drive round them all to find a decent piece of wood.

Not that oversize in the scale of things.
A proper sawmill should manage that easily, but don’t know your area.
Welsh borders have Wentwood and Whitney who specialise in hardwood and big stuff. Also just sending some stuff to a place in Forest of Dean area that deals in oversize (>750mm) as well as the mobile sawmill we use quite a bit.
Basically the stuff is out there and the closer you can get to the guy that cuts it the cheaper it’ll be.
Ideally, you want something that has been milled into a blank larger than you need that can be re-profiled/planed to your size. Depending on the size you want, big planer thicknessers can be hard to come by.

What are you using it for? Some timber will be better than others, however all is likely to cup a little. how long do you want it?

Have a look at Lathams website for some ideas of what they carry, wide = expensive, but only really a factor if you’re buying lots.

Oh, and whatever it is, if it’s for an internal use, ask for kiln dried window board material, it should be more stable that way.

Occasionally send stuff into there and a former colleague buys from there for lock gate repairs.

Edit to add – Charlton do big stuff, but we only send softwood there, not to say they don’t do hardwood though.

From where I sit I can see an oak plank sourced from Charlton, 2m x 200 x 20. I don’t know their max size, though.

Exotic Hard woods are located in Chapel en le Frith so not too far from Glossop.

They have a wide range of boards and have been very helpful to me in the past. Not sure what you want to spend but they have a Paduak board on their website for £70 that is 12” wide x 1” thick x 84” long.
