I’ve tried and tried to get on with cleats, but so far I’ve not been able to get any shoes that are wide fitting, so all that happens is that my feet cramp up and ache like buggery while riding, which isn’t too good for concentration, or fun riding 🙂

So I’ve gone back to flat pedals and trainers, but I’d like to give spd mtb shoes another go.

Specialized shoes have been way too narrow and I tried a few pairs on at Evans, but nothing there – on display anyway.

Anyone here got any experience of / recommend some wide fitting mtb shoes ?

Lake come in wide fittings as do Sidi and Shimano do wide fitting versions of their shoes/boots. You are best if you know length you need to order from the Internet in wide fitting as in my experience it’s easier to return them but mainly get them ordered in, in the first place! I’m size 12 duck feet and have a pair of sidi MTB shoes that I wear on the road bike, lake 303 boots on wide fit for winter MTB and shimano mt41? In wide fit, the black ones with the lace covering flap and filled in fronts and a summer pair with the mesh fronts……you can never have too many shoes 😆

Troll shaped feet and I found that the Giro HV fit well. Evans sell them.

I’m a size 8.5 when measured on the machine in Clarks but with a H width (Hobbit width? 😆 ) so I have to size up a size or two in SPD shoes. I have a pair of Specialized Tahoe Sports, and Shimano M089 wide fit, both Euro 45. With both of them I could have probably sized down to a 44 1/2 but I’ve found its hard to get half sizes in cycling shoes as a lot of places don’t seem to stock them. The 44 Tahoes were too tight and the 44 M089s were a more snug fit than the 45s but my small toes were right at the end of the shoe and I prefer a little more wiggle room.

Bontrager apparently do wide fitting shoes and if money isn’t a problem Sidi do an ultra-wide fit.

I tried Shimano wide fit, North Wave, Sidi and found Specialized to be the widest. They dont go too pointy at the toes which suit my flipper style feet.

Depends where your foots widest. I actualy find SIDI and Spesh to be quite wide in the normal fittings. Tried bontranger, they were wide, but it felt like it was wide at the arch where it strapped up rather than in the toes. Northwave I find pinch just behind the ball of my foot, but it’s Ok as they’re my winter boots and a size up and big socks fill the empty bits and squash down in the tight bits.

Basicly, you’re going to have to try some on!

Avoid Fizik though, they’re lovely shoes, but for balerinas only.

Didn’t know SIDI did MTB shoes, I use them on the motorbike and they fit like a glove 🙂

Will try the Giro and Shimano too. Will get my inner Imelda Marcos out and about to Evans and the Spesh store this weekend

Nice and wide but the soles ain’t ‘alf slippy…

I have 5:10 impact xvi clipless shoes. They are pretty wide and very comfortable.

Bont do wide fitting MTB shoes too. Mouldable to a certain extent. A sensibly shaped toe box too.

Is a frustrating exercise trying to find something that fits though, my house earlier…

I had a good look around for shoes for my “special” wide feet last year. I tried Specialised, Giro and Shimano wide / HV versions, but nothing was wide enough. HV tended to mean tall rather than wide. At one point, a bit like @mrblobby above I had ~£500 of bike shoes in the kitchen.

I settled on Bont Riots, which are wide rather than pointy and you can put them in the oven to soften & reshape. 1000km on (road mostly) I’m really pleased with them.

You might hate me for saying this but I have tried everything. I have very wide feet. The only ones that fit and are comfy are muddy fox from sports direct

I have wide feet and get on far better with my shimano DX shoes than any previous shoes. I’ve got the old ones but the newer equivalents (AM45?) would be worth a try. If you like that sort of thing. They’re also cheap and have lasted me longer than anything I’ve had before.

I generally found Specialized to be wider than the other traditional SPD shoes I’ve tried but still not quite wide enough for me. Tahoes fitted as someone above mentioned, but I wrecked them.

The best fitting shoes I’ve got are a pair of Specialized wide fit road shoes, I managed to get someone in the US to get them for me. Unfortunately Specialized don’t import any of their wide fit shoes to the UK, I don’t think they import them to Europe. I tried some Giro HV’s last week but too narrow on the toe box, why do shoe manufacturers think everyone needs winkle pickers?

Worth noting that S-Works shoes around the 2015/6 model years have some big last variations depending on when/where they were put together. Also, as most S-Works shoes are hand finished, there can even be a variance between ones made in the same factory run!

I’ve got wide feet and found that Bontragers were too wide so they’re an option.

I have ridiculous platypus-esque feet. SIDI Mega fit are the best MTB SPD I’ve owned, In fact they’ve been the comfiest item of footwear full stop.

Not tired SIDI or Bontranger will try. Which model of Bontranger do you have?

I don’t have any as they were too wide even for me. Mate has, I think they were about £70.
