Has anyone cycled this trail? Is it possible to do it on a road bike or is an mtb best. Any suggestions? Thanks

You can ride this trail on type of bike when its dry , but is more fun on a mtb . Its suitable for all the family and the country side and coastal views are the dogs whatnots .

Its a great trail, Ive ridden end to end once on a mtb and twice on my cross bike (so I can get breakfast in scarborough) and you could ride it on a road bike, it is bit lumpy in places though.

Walked half of it a few weeks ago – I certainly wouldn’t dream of riding it on my road bike unless it was a big old tourer with some chunky tyres or a cross bike. IMO the ideal bike would be a hybrid. Great views!

I did it about 27 years ago on a Raleigh Pulsar racer with loaded panniers. Not sure that helps though

Thanks everyone for their advice. STR, my road bike is about 27 years old…. 🙂

I wouldn’t do it on a road bike. It’s mostly gravel or cinder track. We used MTBs with 1.5in slicks on and that was fine, but you’d rip road bike tyres to shreds. You’d be fine in a hybrid or CX bike and a full MTB would be overbiked. 🙂
It’s a lovely ride though. Half gentle climb then half steady descent. 🙂

Thanks PP, I’m leaning the mtb way. Depends how many bikes I can fit on the car.

I did it last year on a cx with 30mm tyres. Some sections are better than others.

You can do it on a road bike but it will be sketchy in parts and you will have to go slower.

There were sections of holes and rutts etc and other bits of deep sand. I really enjoyed it.

Done Scarborough to RHB many times, short travel susser would be my choice 🙂

Used to ride parts of this virtually daily as my parent’s house is in Scalby (North Scarborough).
Nice gentle ride and can easily stop off at Robin Hoods Bay (bit of a climb out though), Boggle Hole and Ravenscar (Jet can be found on the beach). Virtually no roads to cross.

Same advice as above, not suitable for a full on road bike, but CX/MTB fine.

A nice ride. You can make the most of the fun bits off to the side on a mtb.

Didn’t have the time the other day, but these are pics of our ride along it…

It’s lovely! There’s a good cafe half way along it too 🙂

Ace pics PP, we’re staying near Robin Hood’s Bay. The kids can’t wait, bikes, buckets and spades, kites and metal detector at the ready. Although the kites and metal detector belong to the big kid. 😀
