    Dear Whisky-lovers,

I can’t stand the stuff but MrAdamW does. I was thinking of recommending a bottle of Hibiki 12 year old as I’ve never seen him try Japanese stuff before (Tesco: £37) and get it for him on behalf of his parents who are 84/85.

Can you recommend? I think he’s got a lot of Scottish Speyside and Isla stuff and that one from the Isle of Skye (Talisker).

yeh, that would be a little different, i’ve tried it and it was decent stuff.

speyside and isla are very different styles, so looks like he’s not tied down to any particular style, so going off these shores seems a good shout.

you can get swedish (mackmyra) and irish (green spot) for around that price too.

or maybe introduce him to Grain Whisky?

Nikki, Teeling or Bains are all good grain whiskies in that price bracket.

This is my pick from Japan.

Lovely, lovely stuff. About £45 a bottle if memory serves me right.

Hibiki 12 is great. The Nissan GTR of speysides. The sheer audacity of taking a number of single malts, casking them up for 12 years separately and then blending them together takes some getting used to. But it all works very well indeed.

Didn’t Johnnie Walker used to do this for their higher end stuff?

Arguably almost all malt whisky is a blend of malts anyway.

    Quite possibly.

Yeah, Johnnie Walker is a blend.

Can also do worse than a decent bourbon, something like a van Winkle…

Hibiki is lovely but the tesco one for that price is only 500ml. Nikka whisky from the barrel is superb (also 500ml but in this case that’s just how it comes) and the yamazaki is my personal favourite. Always preferred the 10 yr rather than the 12 yr but it seems to have almost trebled in price over the last few months

Yamazaki as above. You can pick it up in waitrose for £45.

Thanks folks! I’ll look at both the Hibiki and the Yamazaki.

STW comes up trumps again! 😀

Not if it says Single Malt on the bottle, it isnt!

yes it is,…it’s a blend of single malt from different casks within the same distillery.

a blended malt whisky is single malts from different distilleries blended.

a blended whisky is a mix of blended single malts and single grain whisky.

Single cask, single malt whisky is whisky from one cask from one distillery.

The SINGLE in single malt refers to a single distillery, nothing else.

i’m sure you know this but just clarifying for anyone that doesn’t. 🙂
