Looks like I might be working in Speke for a few months, anybody advise where is good and where to avoid near Speke. I don’t mind travelling 5-6 miles.

Places to avoid near Speke. Speke. Seriously, it’s a proper grade A shithole.
There are some hotels on the new business/retail park which might be ok.

    Where are you working?

You could stay in Widnes, although that’s horrible. Warrington is fine in places, Liverpool is within 5-6 miles.

Depends what you want really, quiet or good nightlife, things to do? Let us know what you’re after and we can probably give you better advice.

TBH – I’d stay in the city centre or somewhere like Frodsham
I’ve had a few nights in the Forest Hills Hotel in Frodsham & it was OK, I seem to recall a very good Chinese restaurant there too

A friend of mine has a B&B in Crowton. He works in Liverpool and gets the train in every morning form Acton Bridge.

They Regularly have people staying for long periods. Plus Delamere Forest is just down the road (2 miles)!

If you want their contact details I’ll PM them to you

I can second the Forest Hills Hotel in Frodsham. We use it when we race at Oulton Park. Im sure aswell the entrance road to the hotel crosses the Delamere Way which im sure you can use to get to Delamere Forest which is not too far away.

Thanks for the input, i’ll have a look if the train station is near where i’m working. I have spent quite a lot of time in Frodsham, I like it, but isn’t the runcorn bridge a nightmare? I am propbably looking for a short term rent on an appartment or B&B. I prefer something quiet, but i guess it would be fun to live near Liverpool center for watching bands….

Deos anyone know what Garston is like? There are a few flats for rent there.

Anywhere along the edge of the Mersey towards Liverpool is going to be pretty rough but it all depends on your expectations. We lived just down the road for a year or so and only got broken into three times. The car was only stolen once, we only saw one man carrying a gun and only saw one car jacking.

You could try towards Hale from the airport. That’s lovely, might be a bit expensive though….and isolated.

Try heading inland, Gateacre is alright (posh part of Liverpool), Woolton ok. if you’re gong to be commuting by bike then the Transpennine trail runs right through the middle of liverpool and passes metres away from Speke airport. Anywhere along there could be worth looking at.

It most certainly can be. If you could train it over the bridge that would be far better.

Does anyone know what Garston is like?

    Like Speke but worse.

The whole of that area of Liverpool is somewhat rough. If you are an outsider you’ll never fit in. Don’t even think about taking a bike there. Once they see you riding it they will be looking for an opportunity to relieve you of it. Not because they need it, but because you have it so they will want it. But there’s no riding worth doing anywhere round there.

As mentioned above the best suggestion is for you to stay south of the river, but that brings commuting problems. If you want somewhere decent to stay then your 5-6 miles travelling distance will have to be upped quite a bit.

Worked in Liverpool for 10 years. In general Speke itself and surrounding district is v bad place indeed. Spectacularly so.

What about getting somewhere city centre and commuting out to Speke? I think Liverpool is like everywhere else with a glut of flats thrown up in the city centre?

Liverpool city centre and either bus or train into work, plenty of hotels along the river, around albert dock, just be aware of where you leave your car or van,

All round that area is properly grim. No biking, no hills (apart from Frodsham and Helsby), not much in the way of town planning, more rough areas than good ones. About the only bonus is its close to Liverpool airport so easy to fly off somewhere nice.
Stay S of the river and commute in. Chester is nice.

not all the areas near speke are grim; i used to rent a flat next to calderstones park and then a big house in grassendale in the surburbs

found that everything south of grassendale is rough as **** though

Couple of friends one mine grew up in Speke. One of them still lives there (hey, maybe you could stay at his? Opposite an RC church!). Scary place. My friend (who has managed to escape) drove us through there a couple of years ago in his almost new Evo VIII, showing us his favourite burnt out shops and boarded up houses. He’d taken some little back road to get near there, and even though he was going fairly rapidly we suddenly found a police car behind us, just as we slowed down at the edge of Speke itself.

We cruised around at 28mph, indicating at every junction, still with this traffic car about 20 metres behind. After 5 minutes or so, when the police obviously had checked it wasn’t stolen and was sure we weren’t panicing in any way, he let us go.

I’m still not sure if he was suspicious of us or if he was acting as an escort so we didn’t get car-jacked.

If he was a scouse copper he was probably thinking about nicking it himself.

Ah, a nice, quiet, respectable neighbourhood, then?

I can honestly say, I have never heard of this place Speke, of which you speak.

Liverpool will always paint a worse picture, and funnily enough, people who have never been here seem to think the worst, you know, the ones who make crap scouse jokes thinking they are still funny nearly 30 years after you first heard them….

My wife and all my in laws are scousers and they constantly make scouse jokes. I’ve spent most of the last 25 years living and working in Liverpool and the vast majority of locals will laugh at and re-tell any scouse jokes they hear.

Which is fine, to poke fun at yourself, but not from idiots who have never been to the place and get their impressions of liverpool from reading that piece of sh*t The Sun or Daily Mail.

    Yep, you’re definately a scouser. 😉

If you have spend a long time working in Liverpool you shouldn’t need me to point out that sentiment…

Scousers do self deprecating very well indeed, as you should know, but I have lost count of the times on forums when Liverpool gets mentioned and the ol’ favorite ‘hubcap’ jokes come up, which are plain boring, and a scouser can spot that a mile off
