Bit of an obscure question but I’ve googled it without success and STW has come up trumps before with odd/specialised questions.

Our front door sill has a raised strip across it that matches the bottom of the front door to make a draught/weather-proof seal. This strip is a separate piece of wood that locates in a groove in the sill. It is rotten and has collapsed at one end. In profile it’s approx 1cm sq with one corner radiused off and a lip on the opposite corner to fit in the groove in the sill.

I’ve been down to Wickes and they don’t have anything pre-formed that will replace it directly. I can’t think of anywhere else local that would have something.

Is there anywhere on line that sell strips of wood in a variety of profiles? If they don’t have something exactly right I could probably make soemthing fit.

Best bet would be a proper timber merchant, one the whole (mostly because timber isn’t sold in the most mail-order friendly dimensions) good timber merchants aren’t really down with the whole on-line thing.

Some timber merchants have a large rack full of this stuff. Prices vary due to softwood or hardwood etc….

My local wood merchants sell this stuff that you can buy cut to the lengths you want.

You could try Illingworth Inghams on either Crompton road or Hurdfield trading Estate and Macc Timber on Hurdsfield Road, they might be able to help. If it comes off take it with you as its easier to match to

They are just off Hurdsfield Road actually (sorry) pretty much opposite Leyland Paint/Fence Ave. You have to get to it Via Garden St as Steeple St is one way

I’m really struggling to understand what you mean. Some old fashion sills have what is known as a water bar which is designed to stop rainwater flooding into the building, but these are always made out of metal as they would otherwise get damaged/destroyed in no time at all. Your 10x10mm bit of timber on the sill doesn’t sound right.

You can see a water bar here, is that what you’ve got ?

Buy a piece of wood and ‘form’ it yourself?

There’s a lip that locates in the groove of the sill and the rest sits on top of the sill.

Well I don’t think I’ve ever seen a timber water bar before. Make certain you replace it with a hardwood one. Although with such a small profile I would be very tempted to replace it with a metal one – and bed it in silicone.

I’ll replace with (hard)wood if I can.

TBH I would be tempted to replace it with an aluminum threshold which are easily available (on top of the existing sill) Although of course this might not be in keeping with the property, and it would very likely require the bottom of the door to be reduced, so more work. But it would almost certainly result in a better and longer lasting solution.
