Rode every day local this week with the dog in sludgy conditions.
With the forcast of a deep frost decided to go up onto Cutgate whilst it would still be firm.
Set of well, cold and bitter side wind.
Came of a couple of times on solid ice and the going got harder as we climbed up from Langsett, by the time we had got onto the top some of the drifts were thigh deep. Decided to abandon it and turn back. Thought we would have a mess on North America but turned back again due to the depth of the drifts.
Decent back was great with no more crashes.Kryton57Full MemberPosted 3 years agocolournoiseFull MemberNowhere for me again, as foot still isn’t quite right. Hopefully be rolling again at some point early in half term…
stevenmenmuirFree MemberShould really get out on the local trails before the thaw starts tomorrow but did almost 60km yesterday and feeling it today.
KlunkFree Memberlocal bimble
very pleasant riding mostly mud free, hope to get another ride in tomorrow morning before it thaws
ajantomFull MemberDone 3 frozen rides over the last 5 days 🙂
Today especially was summer levels of dry.
Didn’t even have to wash the bike after a 52km ride around Woodbury Common and the Otter valley.
Even bagged a couple of KOMs.crazy-legsFull MemberDragged the ancient MTB out 3 times this week. Trails frozen solid. Been up onto Mount Famine / South Head out of Hayfield but the drifts turned me back on my first attempt a couple of days ago and then this morning I got as far as the turn off to High Brown Knoll (FP which I was intending on riding anyway) but it was calf deep drifts and a freezing wind, the chill must have been -15 or more and I could barely stand in it never mind cycle. So I turned and descended the way I’d come and then off down Coldwell Clough which was all nicely rideable, no ice.
Not far at all (it just took forever riding into that headwind!) but much better than trying to do a road ride in these conditions!
13thfloormonkFull MemberNot been able to get out as much as I would like, but just HAD to get out once while the snow on the minor roads was still compacted but not rutted and slushy, the best conditions for some surprisingly fast singlespeed fun! Was a brilliant wee ride, so even if I’m trapped indoors with deadlines for the next two weeks while it all thaws again I won’t feel too bad
sgn23Free Member-7.5° on the Garmin when up on Cleeve Hill, Glousc. this morning, with a bitter wind. Ground was frozen solid, even the deep muddy puddles. Brilliant to get a brief reminder of what summer riding is like 🙂 I even saw some frozen dust being pushed up at one point from my mates wheels!
kayak23Full MemberSo, so nice to have frozen ground today.
I even rode my bike across the flooded meadow, where others were playing ice hockey.
ScienceofficerFree MemberRock solid ground, but all the poached ground from trail traffic means its Rough AF. It put me in mind of The rockiness at Coed-y-Brenin. I got battered on the hardtail today.
jimmy748Full MemberPuddletown for me, its been a while since I’ve had dusty stanchions.
fossyFull MemberOut earlier this week on the MTB, but it’s still a quagmire out there on many trails with the number of foot traffic over the winter.
Took my old Ribble 653 out for a spin – I’ve recently completely refurbished it and it’s a perlescent white now – took some work.

ampthillFull MemberIn an effort to make my mid Beds bimble seem more interesting I strapped a Gopro to the top of my down top tube with an old strip of inner tube
Joking apart getting back on the local trails again, courtesy of Jack Frost, has been fab. Third time this week
gravesendgruntFree MemberLong Weekend…..Lovely winter ride out to Coldrum Long Barrow and back on Thursday:
and then a ride out around Cliffe and back along the Thames yesterday, finding a good amount of non frozen mud:
I haven’t quite worked out how to deal with cleaning layers of frozen mud off the bike after a ride yet – it was a bit of a mission.
whitestoneFree MemberOut on the fat bikes today. Chuffin’ freezing! About -5C on the tops but an absolute gale from the east.
The canal had a bit of a skin …
Barden Moor was icy rather than snowy. We decided to go with the wind, some were riding the other way which just looked hard work. Never seen this bit iced up before:
A bit more snow once you got higher but it was very patchy, I think the low temps and high winds have just stripped it away.
Stopped for a bite to eat out of the wind. Despite having taken a down jacket to wear for any stops I still got a bit cold and with the main descent coming straight away it was about half an hour before I properly warmed up – didn’t take the jacket off for an hour!
Didn’t let up on the descent either, about half the length of the track was sheet ice so we mostly just rode across the fields to the side!
A total of 49km with 900m of ascent. Think it might be a bit damp tomorrow 🙁
teethgrinderFull MemberSnowy as a bastard. Well, windy and blowing the fallen snow into ridiculous drifts, so the first ride out in a month thanks to the Bat AIDS was 4 miles of half ride, half walk.
molgripsFree MemberOnly a tiny bit of snow here in Cardiff but this week has only tipped up above freezing for a few hours a day, and only in town. So the trail mud is rock hard unlike the last frosty spell when it was mostly mud with a crusty top. A couple of great ridea this week on local trails. The terribly muddy bits where they’ve been felling are now just really bumpy and technical.
doomanicFull MemberNowhere fun… 😒 Lockdown means local only and all the bridleways are quagmires and all the woods have no access signs round here so it was a 54KM backroad ride to Moreton in Marsh for hot chocolate and a brownie and back. Same but different tomorrow with Winchcombe being the target. Taking the hilly route though so hopefully I’ll be able to catch some roadies and buzz their back tyres on the climbs.
llamaFull MemberDid a road gravel ride. Ground like summer, air and wind like Greenland. Bike came back cleaner than the start.
dobiejessmoFree MemberThe Cotswolds above Cheltenham and Gloucester have been frozen solid for the last 3days very rare Lecky was great and Cranham woods were dry and frozen will probably have to wait another 4months too be that dry in Cranham great riding just a shame cant go down the Forest Of Dean bet that was ACE today not worth an £800 fine.
NorthwindFull MemberYet another pentlands blast. If it wasn’t for the snow I’d be going mad tbh but it’s kept it both novel and fun to ride instead of the usual february swamp. Wind and drifting snow was a bit much today though, like having little knives thrown at you so I hid in the trees
jam-boFull MemberThought I grab the last slice of dry/cold conditions yesterday. Three corners into first DH section, tore a hole in tyre, wouldn’t seal, didn’t have any tubeless plugs, couldn’t get valve out to fit a tube. Got cold fingers. Swore. Pushed back to the van and came home to sulk.
shitting it down with rain now.

Where do you live? Channel Islands? I find that hard to believe
Fossy:
Out earlier this week on the MTB, but it’s still a quagmire out there on many trails with the number of foot traffic over the winter.
How much earlier in the week? The difference between Wednesday and Saturday was huge here in Manc. Ice topped bogs on Wednesday, but absolutely frozen solid on Saturday. Looks like you missed a treat.
gallowayboyFull Member2.5 hours around the higher hebden bridge routes was exciting but quite enough! Warm enough with enough windproof/layers on but by God that was a wind! The snows all in the lanes and behind walls hiding from it. No photo, I wasn’t taking my gloves off! Some impressive ice patches, best one at House of shyte.
RoterSternFree MemberI just went for a ride around the local lakes. The snow is so deep it’s only possible to ride on compacted parts ( either from vehicles or XC skiers) which makes it all great practice for balancing. It was about -12 yesterday and today is another beautiful day. I think I’m going to try the winter CX bike on the roads today. Strangely enough the roads in the countryside have been mostly cleared where as the city roads are still under snow.

I was planning on heading up that way myself but a dropper failure heading out of Skipton meant I limit my ride to a more local route. Headwind riding towards Ilkley was freezing then Skipton Moor was sheet ice! Would ave taken some pictures but the dropper disaster meant I just wanted to (limp) home.
olly2097Free MemberCandy woods Oswestry.
Llynclys common. Oswestry.
Blodwel bank quarry. Oswestry.Come to think of it they are all I’ve pretty much ridden in the last year. Repeatedly.
Looking forward to being allowed out and about now.

grahamt1980Full MemberCouple of loops round chicksands, lovely in the dry. Not long distances though but it’s more like interval training
sirromjFull MemberJust another doorstep ride in Thanet. Looked at the weather forecast and realized I’d miss the opportunity to ride on hard frozen dry ground unless I went out for a night ride last night. 17 miles 675ft climbing.
Strong crosswind here was a challenge to stay on the path:
In some areas the snow had cleared:
Very last off road track near my house was the only one unrideable due to excess snow:
Anyone else enjoy gamlbing riding over ice puddles wondering if it will break or will I skid out? So good when neither of those things happen and just the noise of knobbly tyres on the ice for a few seconds.
According to the forecasts the temperate down here is rising by 10C tomorrow.
cb200Free MemberRoad then up to some local dh trails at Watchwood plantation. Plenty of riders getting in before the mud reappears.
Frosty, solid and grippy – so nice. I put the gravel bike to the test and have been very much enjoying some pumping and jumping, honing my technique.
smogmonsterFull MemberApart from Watopia, absolutely no-sodding-where as usual in this lockdown. The local lanes are a death trap with snow and ice, and its a half hour drive to the nearest trails, which is against the rules – at least morally if perhaps not absolutely legally. The sooner this sh1t ends the better.
montylikesbeerFull MemberSome great images ^^^ folks, it’s a pleasure to share what we are all up to.
For me a bit of road work on the Camino today with a hack out around Rossendale.
I wanted to check out the gearing to plan wider rides over the hill into Terra Incognito (Yorkshire)
All was well until the short climb up to Deerplay when the savage wind stopped me in my tracks, so I stopped for a photo opportunity 😉

Are you sure? As with loads of other people I’ve been amazed at the trails I have discovered locally during lockdown. Posh flat Cheshire just to the south of me and we’ve found some lovely ( in comparison to staying at home) frozen, fast swoopy trails to play on.
Just be a bit more flexible on the footpath/ bridleway definition.
davrosFull MemberAwful conditions on the edge of Sheffield. Sheet ice everywhere. Should have turned back when I saw a family sliding down the bridleway on their arses. Just about managed to stay upright. I’m now ready for spring. 16 degrees next weekend, bring it on.
fossyFull Member@thegeneralist Yes missed out, went out Wednesday. Needed to give the Ribble a roide – just done 10 miles on it since the refurb, so needed another shake down. Had to pop the seat post up 1cn as it had slipped since the re-build. Not really ridden the road bikes since I got my spine broken commuting to work 5 years ago. Did a few rides on my ‘posh’ vintage bike in September at our caravan in North Wales, then decided to refurb my Ribble. Never commuting again, but it’sOK on the road out of commute hours – had many commuting incidents, but non doing normal rides.
Pleased with the refurb tbh. Rattle cans and lots of prep. Looks ace now.
