Does anyone else hate it when the internet tries to be too clever and ends up doing stuff with unintended consequences

For example the good mrs WF has obviously been secretly looking for presents for me on Ebay on this computer. So now I keep getting direct Emails from Ebay asking if I am still interested in such and such a product (that I know I haven’t been looking at). Kind of spoils the surprise of Christmas 🙁

Another example is when I tried to plan a summer trip across the Alps while sitting at home in the middle of winter. Try getting directions across the Alps from Google and it won’t let you include any Alpine passes as they are all closed with snow. I know that, but I want to drive them next summer, not now !!!!!

In relation to the eBay issue, Mrs WF should really be browsing eBay under her own account if she was looking for stuff on the sly for you.

Google – you’re doing it wrong.
You can specify dates of travel in the options.
Mrs? Get her her own log in on the laptop and no issues with cookie tracking.
Jamie – doesn’t matter which account if its done in a browser – Google will target the ads according to the browsing history same as the shite that keeps coming up on here casuing everyone issues.

You know that you can change the date that you are travelling on Google Maps?

Well at least you know the missus doesn’t use dating sites or porn.

Do you share an email address?

    Share a PC login?

    Share shopping accounts?

This is what the Networking guys call a layer 8 issue.

My Mrs shares a common ignorance of how PCs and stuff works. She wouldn’t even realise that our one PC is logged in to various things like Ebay in my name (she very rarely uses the computer). I will check the google maps date thing, it certainly isn’t obvious…..

    Choose location.
    Click directions.
    Choose start point.
Under that lot it will then give you various routes with a big “+” “leave now” and “options” directly under the two locations.

    Fairly obvious that one….

Cheers hammy. I had already found it by looking. But it still won’t allow me to route over Alpine passes, even though I have set the departure date to mid July…..

Have you tried an alternative mapping site?
    Such as AA, viaMichelin etc..

You can drag a route point to the top of the pass and it will go via there, it’s trying to find the best way not the scenic long way round.
