Those who struggle with the simplicity of that find/invent some other reason, often involving religion.

You’re looking for meaning where there is none.

The purpose is gene propagation.

1. you’re born – you cry the moment you were born as you knew what’s ahead. PAIN! 😆

2. you live life (hopefully a happy one) – you endure it with all the goods and bads but usually bad (just that you ignore them). You aged, your health may or may not deteriorate and follow by the inevitable.

3. you die – which is inevitable because you cannot live forever.

Natural selection is a tiny part of the process that led to ‘us’. A lot of the rest is chance, or rather is too complex/chaotic to calculate or predict accurately.

Pure luck, given a helpful nudge in the right direction by the laws of physics.

Given that, and the infinitesimally small likelihood of it being you that’s born, I feel it would be terribly remiss* not to make the most of what’s on offer out there in the big wide world.

Of course often when people say “why are we here?” they actually mean “what is my purpose in all this?” on the assumption that there is more to life than replicating DNA. That further purpose depends on the individual and testing wheel sizes or eating pies and drinking beer are just as valid as anything else in that sense.

I’m the product of a few billion years of evolution. I don’t really have a purpose in life but I have passed on my genes, seemed rude not to.

I’d probably say ‘to procreate’ too.

However, as someone who’s decided against having children, I think it’s all about making the most of your time here, learning and creating. Some people do extreme sports, travel etc, some people take hallucinogenic drugs, some people study archaeology. Whatever floats your boat. Personally, I try to work as little as possible in order to spend time making music, riding my bike, reading, and spending time with my friends.

You are right, they can not. But all matter is heading towards entropy – which means if the physists that don’t ascribe to the cyclical model are right and the big bang won’t be followed by a big crunch….then all that will be left is a vast ever expanding cold dead universe inhabited by lifeless stars and planets.

Personally, I hope that there is a big cruch, followed by another big bang in an endless cycle….as that will fit into my worldview rather nicely.
