So I need to buy a new shock.

I can either get one from my LBS or pick up a new, boxed shock with no warranty for about 75% of the that price.

Either a Monarch Plus or Fox X2, if that influences your answer.

Ultimately it’s worth the cost of a rebuild new shock if you have a problem. You could probably get a 25% discount to LBS price and a warranty by shopping around online.

Yeah it’s a gamble innit? 25% discount but the risk of having to fork out 50% if you’ve got a lemon.

Two-year warranty with RS though, which is making me lean towards paying the extra there. Plus the fact that Monarchs do seem to have their problems.

My LBS is actually about the cheapest in UK (it also does a lot of mail order).

However the Fox is the shock I really want.

Can’t even find length of warranty on their site or on Mojo’s.

In the case of the Monarch, and from those I’ve heard about, I’d say the warranty was more valuable than the shock 😛

    Do it on the X2.

You’re a brave man if you you buy the monarch without a warranty though.

Two year warranty on the Fox as well, think I’m gonna go for the warranty either way then.

given the reports of wear on Monarchs, particularly from owners of the Kona Process (your bike IIRC?) where the yoke design MAY increase wear, I’d be after a warranty.

I’d go for the X2 irrespective of warranty.

Or get a coil and be done with the 1lb increase in weight. Less to go wrong, less prone to wear on the whole.

Some tasty deals around on Kage/Vivid shocks.

The Kage will be better than every air shock except the Float X2.

As the owner of a monarch debonair plus, I’d choose anything else.

It’s not even good enough to use as a donor for avalanche internals.
