Me and the girlfriend get through loads of DVD Boxsets, some of my favourites:

The West Wing – girlfriend loved it despite not being into politics.
    Dexter
    Braking Bad
    Six foot under
    Entourage
    House

As mentioned above Homeland is also excellent.

    Spooks. The Killing (original)

If you want to watch something currently on the TV the OH loved the previous series of The Hour.

    Spooks
Mad Men – I actually thought it would be a bit lame but from a guy’s point of view it’s quite entertaining looking at how things used to be. Fair bit of womanizing and boozing….

House is brilliant. But you have to like medical dramas. It’s also very funny. Lawrie is genius.

I’ve not seen it yet, but The Wire does seem to be consistently raved about by pretty much everyone. Not heard anyone have a bad thing to say about it, ever.

I watched BSG recently and really enjoyed it, but whether your OH would get on with it is another matter. It’s ostensibly a soap opera in space, could maybe pitch it on that basis? </outrageous gender stereotyping>

The OH and I are currently watching, and enjoying, Fringe at the moment. It’s sort of X-Files: The Next Generation.

Best price I can find for The Wire is £45, at Amazon. You can pick up series 1 for like £15 though.

Alternatively, LoveFilm carry it. Dunno about Netflix, I tried to check but their website is impenetrable unless you sign up.

    Good call; brilliant little series.

Incidentally, if you fancy a superb mini-series that no-one’s ever heard of, I can heartily recommend The Lost Room.

Breaking Bad is the best TV series I have seen and Charlie Brooker agrees so it must be true. It just keeps getting better as each season progresses. Writing, plot, characters, cinematography – all fantastic.

‘GIRLS’ … that Sky Atlantic series.

You could probably watch it with the kids too.

And the Ashes to Ashes series as well.

The Killing (we watched the US version)
    The Wire is a must
    Sleeper Cell
Jericho – terrible in every possible way, but still strangely addictive.

Life on Mars was about £15 for all episodes on iTunes.

Dexter is my fave of recent years.

Bizarrely Men Behaving Badly nearly always finds its way onto the DVD player in our house if there’s nothing on telly and we have spare time at the same time (rare).

Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes also appear a bit.

Band of Brothers not so much – I think because my wife has always worked in hospitals and has witnessed plenty of blood, guts and carnage for real. So much so that she probably doesn’t want to have to watch it again in her spare time.

On the other hand, I think Band of Brothers is the finest TV drama series of the last ten years.

Breaking Bad is I think a bit overrated, but still good. West Wing when it’s at its best is pretty much unbeatable but it does go up and down.

I’m going to go with Firefly. But then I’m currently watching Dr Who so what do I know?

    1. The Wire Season 1
    2. The Wire Season 2
    3. The Wire Season 3
    4. The Wire Season 4
    5. The Wire Season 5

    repeat as appropriate

Generation Kill – from the same writers as the Wire…and it shows! Set in 2nd Iraq “war”, 7 part series. Some of the actors were the actual characters being portrayed as part of the marine recon unit that the series follows. I only found that out by watching the extras afterwards!

More people based rather than overtly shooty.

Recently me and The Wife have been enjoying Blue Bloods and Boardwalk Empire.

I like True Blood too, but The Wife is not a fan of that one.

I’m going to go with Firefly.

I’m going to sit on the naughty step for failing to suggest that. One of the best sci-fi shows ever, and at 15 episodes it’s not a huge investment.

can’t believe nobody’s said The Shield yet.

I say it in every ‘recommend me a boxset’ thread, and came here to say it again.

    The Shield.

    Nobody ever says The Shield.
