Being in China for quite a few years, last year I was ever so happy when I found Branston Pickle… and now…
I've found Fig Rolls…. I'm so happy (simple things please me)

    What would you miss?

    Lol 🙂

Food wise, when I lived in Finland I had people bring over salt and vinegar crisps, tetley tea and malt vinegar. I really missed Indian food too.

From travels in the US, I'd say decent beer and Marmite.

    Yorkshire tea.

I reckon after a while in China, I'd just get fully hacked off with eating Chinese food.

I've been in Ethiopia for 6 months now, and I don't miss a lot of things like food- I can either do without or find alternatives.

A trip to Addis can get me mexican/chinese/indian food when it takes my fancy.

But, I'm not here for the luxuries!

I do miss riding- its not the same here, though I do have my bike. The level of hassle you get out on the bike can be frustrating.

    And I miss my pals…

At the moment I have been wanting a Cadbury's caramel for about a month – I think right now I would pay about €50 for a bar. Although when I'm back in the UK in September I bet I'll forget about it totally…

well i can relate to that as in Brazil you have to go out in a group otherwise you're going to come home without your bike, so I am told. And don't get me started on their 50% VAT taxes!!!

Having a portable fridge/freezer and a Landy to put it in means that I can keep stocked up with lots of things between trips back to the UK ( 3 – 4 times a year ).

This time I emptied the local M&S of smoky bacon and sausages. Crunchy nut cornflakes/various flavours of squash/Tizer/Vimto and half a year's supply of homemade jam also made the trip back to Holland with me. I would normally bring back beer, but I've still got a fridge full from my trip back in May.

Simon, in the year I was in Brazil, 6 months of which was in Rio, I never had any problems, and I rode my bike everywhere, through favellas etc.

Did almost get stabbed in a tunnel though when on foot, and our site doctor was shot in a bar just outside work for her car…

I forgot one really important thing- I really miss anonymity. I am stared at almost all the time I'm outside- a "faranj" is an unusual sight in my town…

You do get used to it, but I realised its very wearing when I was back in the UK…

Simon- I tend to go out very early in the morning to avoid the attention. And the heat!

A previous volunteer had someone attempt to steal her bike when she was out for a ride, and that was a sh*tty Ethiopian one…

Generally don't miss anything, sometimes miss take out food, the chippy or Chinese takeaway. When I think about it it's probably the convenience rather tan quality nosh.
