What water carbonator

We’ve been thinking about getting one as we use 6×2 litre bottles of sparkling water a week. There appears to be a lot of options on Amazon and all look similar. Are they much of a muchnous?

And yes I know it will be more expensive that buying bottles.

I run 19 litre corni-kegs with a co2 cylinder and homebrew regulator. 1 keg with beer and the other with water. Easy if you have space.

Watching this closely – we too get through gallons of supermarket carbonated water so a genuinely more environmentally friendly alternative* would be great

* but I’m not drinking still water – I’m not an animal

Was bought one of the drinkmate models from Amazon a few years back and it does the job well, but there was a period where I couldn’t get replacement co2 bottles and then just stopped using it and it is a lot more expensive than buying the bottles ready sparkled. Not sure I’d recommend it at the price it’s at now. Was talked out of a soda stream by colleagues saying it was expensive on replacement co2 bottles or something.

I once picked up one of the old-style soda syphon things from a charity shop, the sort of thing you might have seen in a pub before Wunder-Bar guns took over the world.  I quickly discovered why it was in the charity shop in the first place, it was hopeless.

I only found out recently where Sodastream are from, so yep, I’ve binned ours.

Why’s that then?  This is a story which has passed me by.

My dentist said carbonated water is very bad for your teeth

Everything is bad for your teeth, life included. I’m pretty sure sparkling plain water is one of the less worrisome things. I can’t stand the flavoured crap with loads of sweeteners in it.

We get through a lot, San Celistino from Lidls, so have looked at options but heard that most just taste naff, and i know some wont believe it, but when you drink it lots you do notice the different tastes due to the salts etc in it.

Got an aarkle carbonator 3. It a lovely, if spendy, thing. Waited for a sale though.

Get my cylinders throught these lot, who are lovely to deal with and worked much better for me than the sodastream scheme.

I am also an Aarke Carbonator 3 user.  Had it for just over a year and very happy with it, it is in the Hammertone finish and looks great in the kitchen.  Before buying I did look at the SodaStream offerings but they all seemed to be very cheap plastic.    Aarke do have some reduced products on their website, hidden under the ‘Archive’ section.

For gas I refill the Soda Stream gas bottles from a 6kg large CO2 bottle.  It works out at about £2 per fill.  I did have to invest in the first 6kg bottle and decanting connector, but that didn’t take long to pay for itself as we get through a sodastream gas bottle in about 2 weeks.

Bought an Aarke Carbonator 3 new/sh at the weekend off Facebook market place. Looking forward to trying it as soon as the bottled water runs out.  Any tips?

@Timbur It is very easy to use.  Fill the bottle to the line.  Screw bottle onto the machine.  Hold the lever down twice and you have sparkling water.

It works best with chilled water, we have found tap water tastes fine when sparkled.   We did start by using filtered water, but really couldn’t taste the difference.  The thread connection for the water bottles is the same as the soda stream bottles, so you can use those if you want.

Find the best way to buy the gas that suits you.  SodaStream and CO2you both have schemes that work out at £10 per co2 bottle.   Both these schemes are cheaper and easier than buying it from a shop and then taking the empty bottle back for a refund.  I would guess that one co2 bottle will gas 40-50 bottles of water, although never really counted.     If you can justify the initial outlay then you can decant CO2 from a larger cylinder which works out much cheaper.

Will look into a few spare bottles as well. Good tip on the SodaStream ones.

There isn’t a set time,  but you will here the noise change when it has pressurised the bottle enough.   As the co2 bottle becomes empty it takes longer and longer to get enough pressure.

It’s allegedly 60 litres, i’d say a fair bit less.

I’ve got a SodaStream, it works, the gas lasts ages. Not much more to say.
