I’m going to a series of lectures on the 28th partly out of interest and partly to network with potential future employers/people that will be potentially interviewing me in PhD applications.

Suit, Shirt and Slacks, Jeans and a T-shirt? Pocket watch and a monocle? I have no sodding idea as I’ve not been to a conference or a lecture attended by so many of the kinds of people going.

A wife-beater t-shirt would be best for showing off your tattoos.

RSC : shirt, no tie, trousers. Don’t forget your trousers.
It’s rare for any scientific chaps to wear ties.
Can you get some instant business cards made up with your contact details?
Don’t forget a notebook for getting peoples’ details

My suit fits me well  Suit and no tie then! If no one else is wearing a jacket I can dump it in my bag.

Cheers chaps, yeah I won’t forget a notebook. Buisness card? I don’t feel acomplished enough to have one yet.

Suit no tie but with tie in the pocket just in case you want to make a particular impression on someone. Also worth getting some practice on improving your tolerance to sherry as that always seems to be the tipple of choice handed out at that sort of event. You learn to regret clutching a glass for far too long so it goes warm and even more vile before having to down it and not grimace in front of someone you’re trying to give a good impression to!

Main tip would just be to speak to people, don’t try and show how clever you are, just try and strike up a bit of conversation even if it’s not related to the event.

agree with honeybadger, most of the big bods there already know how clever they are 😉 so trying to outsmart them is pointless, they are only there for the free wine tbh

(if you were a lady id suggest something else as its a bit of an old boys club)

whats the talk on, whos going to be there?

Is it the BTS meeting you’re going to?
I should have been there, but decided I cannot be arsed.
Anyway, don’t worry about the suit. People don’t. There’ll be a few cardi’s, the choice is yours.

I google imaged “engineer” and on the first page there wasn’t one that didn’t have a hard hat.

So you’ll need a hard hat.*

    * I’m an engineer and don’t have a hard hat. 😕

I’d suggest that you’ll look out of place in a suit. Smart casual is the look you need to be sporting.

Me, the last time I was at the Royal Soc

A “look what I’ve been invited to!” thread. 😉

Kimbers, I’m going to the Cell Adhesion series of lectures. There are going to be a lot of speakers including a number of lectures I want to see. Unfortunately I can’t make it to the ones that I find most interesting on the 29th, unless my boss is feeling kind tommorow.

A “look what I’ve been invited to!” thread.

    Precisely, peasants.

Unfortunately all I had to do was register, I’d never be invited to such a place (banned maybe?).

    Entertaining thread guys, cheers!
