What sub £300 new mtb for friend?

A friend has asked me what bike they should get and though i’m familiar with building up the odd bike and ride a fair bit, i have no idea what ‘off the shelf mtb’ is good value/ride
Its a strict £300 budget, i’ve already recommended hardtail at this budget and he would most likley need to try before he buys.

I’m selling my 2008 GT Aggressor,Halfords version of the Avalanche,but with lots of upgrades above the one above,new Hayes brakes,Tora 302 sl’s etc..its a large frame though but for sale within budget.

Yes unless it fits him, only avalible in small or large, unless it can be found anywhere else for that price.
