It looks like we will need a second car shortly so need to start looking.

Budget will be £2k max and preferably diesel

Sporty looking would be good too but not essential.

    What would you look at?

Is impact resistance an important consideration?

Seriously, at £2K I would forget about any superfluous factors like ‘looking sporty’, and only focus on condition and how much it is going to cost you to keep it going.

Volvo S60? They look quite good with the bigger wheels and you get a lot of very decent car for the money.

Civic 2.2 cdti   bomb proof Honda engineering and goes like a stabbed rat with enough room for 3 and 3 bikes

As said above, the wedge shaped Civic 2.2 Diesel is a superb car. Quick as you’ll ever need. Good girl (edit fuel, had to leave girl in though..) economy. Reliable and solid. “Magic” folding back seats that give you a completely flat platform and acres of space. Drive really well and look funky inside and out. Had one for a couple of years and loved it, only gave it up due to expanding family.

Failing that a Focus is cheap, reliable and an all round good car. But test drive the Focus and the Honda one after t’other (as I did) and it’s the Honda, no question.

    A pre 2006/7. VAG 1.9 TDi.

    What it’s in doesn’t matter.

    Or a petrol Mondeo.

Another vote for the Civic. Great car, bombproof, nice to drive, more space than you’d think. Radio reception is a bit shit though, something to do with windscreen aerial.

You’d struggle to find a good 159. Maybe a 156 but they do rot.

Ive a Saab 9-3 120bhp it’s been bullet proof done 30k in it in 12months does 54ish combined not.

    Or try n find a good 130tdi Passat…
