  • What hardtail frame for 100mm forks

I’m looking to build up a MTB from scratch for XC and general trail riding. I’ve already got a set of 100mm forks that I’d like to put on the bike. Budget for the frame is around £250. I’ve looked at the following frames already:
    -OnOne Scandal – seems ideal
    -Rock Lobster
    -Ragley piglet – too heavy?

    Any suggestions?

    Cheers!

You can get an old steel Kona second hand for reasonably cheap.

Scandal is great at 100mm. I ruined mine trying to make it into a longer-forked trail bike, though- just because On One say it works, doesn’t mean it works, it turns out.

If you want a 100mm-sort-of-bike, then it is a very 100mm-ish-sort-of-bike. Though I think I’d probably look at a Whippet instead these days.

rock lobster 853 – perfect at 100mm, comfy, fast, quite light.

Scandal is really light, agile and has an expensive-feeling ‘spring’.
I much prefer it to my Inbred which I find heavy, dead and boring.

    All the above sound good.
Personally, I’d hang on for 10-14 days hoping that something like this drops a bit further in the January sales :

Wouldn’t it be great if the lobster could take a +130 plus fork?

For the price its a bargain no? Why is a lightweight 853 so expensive outside of lobster land?

Thanks for the suggestions, Scandal seems to be popular but you guys have suggested some that I hadn’t known about.

Have you looked at the Konas in the CRC frame sale? Some nice stuff on there.

    what forks are they?

lots of 100mm rockshox forks (like rebas) can be opened up and altered to 120mm by removing/adding spacers.

might open up your options a bit.

Didn’t know this, and they are 100mm Rebas. An option indeed…
