Do The Right Thing
The Horne Section Podcast
My Time Capsule
The one on the Chernobyl mini series (as Ben is there now)via Sounds
The Unbelievable Truth
Evil Genius
The News Quiz – new host Zaltsman has been goodandehFull MemberDidn’t see them mentioned yet so:
Behind the Bastards – looking closely at assorted awful people from history.
Revisionist History – All kinds of fascinating stuff examined closely
The Blindboy Podcast – General rambling, some short stories. I find it really relaxing.Quite old now but the first few series of My Dad Wrote A Porno are excellent.

The Rugby Pod (not serious)
Eggchasers (Serious)
Rugby Union Weekly (Serious)Also reccommend The Inquiry (BBC, short format, one topic with four ‘experts’)
Oh and the chernobyl podcast was brilliant too, but watch the series its based on first!oldmanmtb2Free MemberDan Snow History Hits, some absolute shite and some absolute gems, think historical podcast lottery.
poolmanFree MemberFor rugby fans add ruck it with Kieran bracken, the earlier ones with Nick easter were better. Some good guests and funny stories.
Jake Humphreys hi performance
Fearne cotton happy place
Don’t tell me the scoreI usually search for peoples names, they seem to be tagged on various pods so you find something new. Works on doublepod app anyway.
Cheers, top suggestions
soobaliasFree Memberjust giving this thread a gentle bump as it occurred to me that i regularly dig out the “boxsets” thread to see what the STW massif have been watching – would be good if this provided similar for the ears.
following the excellent TiRed talks to STW towers,
i also had a listen to the QAnon one, warning: advert heavy

A spoof of a NPR style podcast really but very good fun – well observed down to the presenter-read adverts that are only slightly less plausible then the stuff most podcasters have to read out for money
mudderFree MemberSmith & Sniff
(aka Jonny Smith & Richard Porter)Its supposed to be about all things automotive but hardly ever stays on topic.
Basically a couple of middle aged blokes talking a load of humorous waffle.kimbersFull Memberradio play really

petevanhalenFree MemberOoo thanks for this. Innesmouth was a bit of a cliffhanger
brantFree MemberExcellent true crime with more twists than I I knew about even though I thought I’d followed the case.
https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-crossbow-killer/id1695710879maccruiskeenFull MemberIt’ll be quite old now so not sure if its still available anywhere but ‘Robin and Josie’s Utter Shambles’ has a similar vibe to RHLSTP in terms of being a longer form, more in depth interview with comedians. I quite like that in podcasts – that there isn’t the ‘broadcast clock’ of TV and radio and things are as long as they need to be.
In that Radio 4 vibe – not on iplayer but findable of podcast platforms is the whole back catlalogue of ‘The Unbelievable Truth’ which is quite binge-able. It’s being running for longer than you realise so theres loads of episodes, and while its not topical – which makes it quite timeless – its quite surprising to get occasional casual references to George Bush in early episodes.
Also – on BBC Sounds – Its a Fair Cop
{I presume this is a thread that has been revived by the night time spammers}
ThePinksterFull MemberSimon Evans Goes to Market. A truly fascinating and very funny history of how commodity markets work, money is created and economics. I know it sounds incredibly boring but it really isn’t, especially when Mr. Evans gets into the sex robots.
Only available on BBC Sounds as far as I can tell, unfortunately.
Out To Lunch is a great collection of interviews by Jay Rayner to a wide range of famous people from a lot of differing backgrounds over a lunch in nice restaurants. Jay has recently been replaced by Ade Edmondson.
I’ve also been addicted to We Have Ways of Making You Talk for years. A great 2nd World War podcast hosted by Al Murray & James Holland. Been going for over 700 episodes now and still fascinating.
blokeuptheroadFull MemberA few I’ve enjoyed
The rest is politics
13 minutes to the moon – (Spotify) series 2 about the explosion on Apoll0 13 is even better than series one. Loads of candid interviews with astronauts, NASA controllers, engineers etc.
Stuff the British stole – (Spotify) The Parthenon marbles obviously, but also the back story of loads of other things Britain plundered from around the world. Really obscure, fascinating and often shameful stuff I’d never heard of.
The Bomb – (Sounds and Spotify) series one about Leo Szilard who first realised the possibility of a nuclear chain reaction in the 1920s and 30s and his efforts to convince sceptical scientists (even Einstein) of the potential and implications if Nazi Germany got there first.
Series 2 about Klaus Fuchs – the German/British physicist who worked on the Manhattan project but passed everything he knew to the Soviets, leading to their own bomb.
Spitfire – BBC world service podcast (on Sounds and Spotify). Less about the aircraft, more about the people who built it, ferried it, fixed it etc.
Real survival stories (Sounds)
Ukrainecast (Sounds)
Just one thing – Michael Mosley (Sounds)
The Shamima Begum Story (Sounds)

Good to hear you recommend that. I’ve seen and heard it advertised a lot in Oz as it’s an Australian Broadcasting Commission show I believe. Keep forgetting to check it, so I will do now. The presenter has been on the radio here for years.

This place was great when Google Music died, PowerAmp is soo much better…

Your stupid opinions.
Both by the same pair of American comedians, both funny and frequently in bad taste.

Yeah, forgot to mention it was an ABC podcast. My daughter recommended it to me and I confess I was a bit reluctant initially and was braced for some Aussie Brit bashing, due to the provocative title! It’s really not like that at all though. It’s objective and nuanced, recognising that attitudes were of their time. It also acknowledges good and bad stuff done by all the colonial powers as well as by locals in the countries which were the ‘scenes of the crimes’.
lungeFull MemberMy updated regular listen list:
The Rest is History
The Rest is Football
The Grade Cricketer
Quickly Kevin
Tailenders
Running Commentary
Ellis and John
Oh What a Timewheelsonfire1Full MemberCountrystrides- a gentle ramble with lots of interesting people on the way. Mostly Lake District based but as I met Mark outside a slate mine in North Wales last week he may be thinking of branching out. The last edition I listened to was about Herdwick sheep, very interesting when combined with efforts to preserve the fells and how good intentions can have unexpected consequences.

I had a similar question when Acast announced they were no longer hosting podcasts, and The Great And Good of STW recommended PocketCasts, which I have been very happy with ever since.

As joking as it is there are some very good interviews/opinions on her podcast.(Paul smith one comes to mind)
It’s very very funny at times
creakingdoorFree MemberThe Space Above Us – started in about 2016 and has an episode (sometimes two) dedicated to every manned NASA space flight. Releases every two weeks so it’ll take me ages to catch up as I’ve only just finished the SpaceLab episodes. It’s sometimes heavy on detail, but I don’t mind that, and each ep is only about 30 minutes long, so doable without getting bogged down in nuance. The presenter is a guy called JP, and his enthusiasm is next-level, a proper space nerd. But he does work for NASA…
The Rest is Politics – probs bindun already, but an enjoyable view on the state on things
nickcFull MemberRevisionist History – All kinds of fascinating stuff examined closely
Malcolm Gladwell is very persuasive and talks a good game. It doesn’t mean that his personal take on history or anything else is more correct than others, I read his “Bomber Mafia” book and like some other pop science books (Homo Deus, Guns Germs Steel spring to mind) it’s a good read and well told, but still ‘mostly’ bollocks. Having said that his recent series on gun control was very interesting.
Other pods I’m into:
MTB:
Downtime: Can be dull or weird, but good for tinkering to
Pinkbike: Mostly interesting, great interviews by Henry Quiney
Ride Companion: Arsing about
MTB Podcast by Wide world Cyclery: entertaining and friendly despite the obvious shop/USA bias
Politics
Behind the Bastards: Not really strictly politics but there’s a left wing bent
I Don’t speak German: Tracking the extreme right wing in their own safe spaces; not really a fun listen
Knowledge Fight: 2 idiots listen to crap Alex Jones says and discuss it/critically analyse it
News Agents: Very up to date, a bit tabloid-y /sensationalist
The Rest is Politics: Rory Stewart and Alistair Campbell are anxious
Other stuff
The Rest of History: Nerds only
We Have Ways of Making you Talk: WW2 nerds only
The History of England: Very gentle nerds only
Some Dare Call it a Conspiracy: Ex conspiracist talks about his former life and breaks down theories to show why they are the complete bollox they so very obviously are
chakapingFree MemberThe Banksy Story from the BBC is really interesting and entertaining, if you only have a casual knowledge of the artist.
Making Up the Numbers podcast is the best downhill racing-focused pod at the moment. Good interviews with Oisan and Hattie in the new one.
I think there are some great and some really annoying pods mentioned above, but that’s the joy of them innit – and it’d be churlish of me to slag other peoples’ suggestions off.
+1 for PocketCasts being quite acceptable.
StuFFull MemberAnother vote for The News Agents and The Rest is Politics for news stuff
There’s no such thing as a fish – the QI elves discussing their favourite facts from the last week
If you like IT Security or lack of it, both of these are worth a listen
The Lazarus Heist (bbc sounds) – How North Korea have made an industry of hacking to fund their weapons program
Darknet Diaries (spotify) – all sorts of stories from industrial hacking to acquiring source code for new xbox games
zilog6128Full MemberMy go-to podcast is Stuff you Should Know. Interesting mix of science/nature/history/politics/psychology etc. 2 laid back American guys (with very soothing voices so it’s good to fall asleep too as well 😂) who pick a subject they know little/nothing about, research it, then present it (with science/detail) in an easy to understand way. They’ve been going a long time so about 1500 episodes so far I think!
hatterFull MemberMay I just stick my 2 penneth in?
Origin Story
Ian Dunt and Dorian Lynskey look into current hot button words, ideas phrases and thinkers and dig into where they came from, why and what thy actually mean.
Has the potential to be a solid hour of tedious smug smart arses going ‘well aaaahctually’ but I find it quite fun and very enlightening.
AlexFull Memberbut latest season of Lovecraft Investigations is out & im excited!

Oh excellent. Was hoping for another series.
Also added ‘Spitfire’. I have lots of what’s recommended up there but never get time to listen to them all. I would add:
Empire – Started with India. Moves on to other continents. Lots I didn’t know. Really interesting stuff and two good presenters.
Uncharted – BBC sounds/Hannah Fry. I’d listen/watch anything from her. These are short episodes about what’s hidden in the data/how single charts have made a massive difference. Sounds like it shouldn’t work on Audio. It does. Also CodeBreaker if it’s still on Sounds is another great podcast by HF.
dafojFree Member+1 for the Ride Companion, though just downloaded the latest ep, with Davi talking to someone who “speaks with the dead”. Always keep an open mind but 👀
