  • What film for movie evening with friends?

    Hey.

We’re having some friends round on Friday for dinner and a movie. Does anyone have any recommendations for good films to watch?

I guess I’m looking for something that will be entertaining at the time and give something to think about too. Once Upon a Time in the West is my current thought, or maybe Inception ( or Kung Fu Hustle)?

At a bit of a loss really, trying to get into film at the moment but have mostly just seen the odd one on tv and not given it any thought at all!

    Thanks!

King Fu Hustle is fantastic fun, and well worth the effort .

Troll Hunter would be my ‘current’ suggestion.

Kill List will certainly give you something to think about 😉

But more seriously, how about Submarine? Quirky and funny…

Midnight in Paris (bit arty, but good and won an Oscar).

If you’re not against documentaries, consider some of those. I recommended these ones to a friend recently:

King of Kong – Excellent “cartoon” villain, surprisingly compelling considering it’s about grown men obsessing about old video games
Marwencol – Really interesting angle on the human brain. Quite tragic at times.
Religulous – Not to be watched with sensitive religious friends. Maher can be abrasive at times but if you’re after talking points then an obvious one.

Or watch either of the big Swedish films of recent years (Girl with the dragon tattoo or Let the right one in), then the Hollywood remake and the question can be:

    Why?

Senna. You don’t have to like motorsports to enjoy it. Several people who are not into blokes whizzing around in circles have commented on how good it is.

Submarine is fantastic. Just really charming and funny.

The Guard is excellent too. Really funny

Limitless is good if you fancy a bit of nonsense you don’t have to concentrate on too much

Ooh, Source Code might be another good one along the lines of Limitless et all. Basically very silly, but fun and quite clever.

Zombieland is a fantastic film. Attack the Block and No Country for Old Men are also great choices.

Thanks all, plenty there to look up and consider (with the ‘less helpful’ contributions serving to remind me that this is STW 😉 )!

CFh, easy going friends, just looking for a relaxed evening with a bottle of wine or two, chatting over the top as the film (and whoever is watching most seriously) allow! Figure we’d have dinner first, then movie.

Hadnt considered documentaries, but thinking about it loved ‘Man on Wire’ when I saw that a year or two ago.

if you’re just going to chat over the film then put BBC4 on and pretend to understand it
    😉

Sorry, as I say, new to watching films in any but a ‘it’s on tv, it’ll do’ kind of way… I’ll work towards silent concentration!

The Mrs is terrible for this… She’ll chat over the first 20 minutes, then spend the rest of the film asking me stupid questions because she wasn’t paying attention in the first 20 minutes.

    Zombieland is a fantastic film

Very funny but fantastic is going a bit far.

Thought you’d recommend ‘Dirty Rotten Scoundrels’, your rep around here suggests it would be just your thing.

“Submarine” will make everyone feel good.

“Biutiful” will make everyone feel sad.

“Oldboy” will leave you all feeling a bit uncomfortable 🙂

or just watch Jaws. Everyone loves Jaws 🙂
