  • What £800 bike for a big bugger?

A colleague of mine wants to get back into biking to get fit.
He is 6 foot and about 16 1/2 stone.
He wants a hardtail that will take his considerable girth and weight and can be bought through Cycle to Work.

He used to have a Kona Hoss but they don’t do those clydesdale bikes anymore…any ideas please?

I would have said one of these but out of stock: http://www.on-one.co.uk/i/q/FBOOINX529/on_one_inbred_x5_29er_bike

Frames are in stock and the scandal 29er build is £799 so see if they will do an inbred build (or get a scandal?)

He doesn’t need a Clyde bike, any reasonable quality hardtail will shrug his weight off. Speaking as a big’un myself, I rode an entry level bike for two years without any weight related issues and I was quite a bit heavier than your friend through that time.

Issues most likely to crop up with a square taper bb, cheap spokes/rims and possibly fork if it runs coils, but I’d let him have at it and fix problems if and when they come up.

He isn’t big. Most anything will do him just fine.
