It is 100% his responsibility to not break the rules of his workplace.

Obviously to his knowledge, he wasn’t aware that he was. Likewise the OP and many others re: data usage.

The HD video that was streaming right in front of his face would have been a clue to the the fact that he was… Erm… Streaming HD Video ?

Wasn’t careful enough and got pulled up for it. Shit happens.

Like I said, the world will keep turning.

I have no intention of reigniting the debate again, but it didn’t even occur to me that it was actually streaming HD video! The entire time! I also think it’s off that turning ads off as a Premier member didn’t turn that one off. But well done to Mark for his swift reaction. I imagine the world will keep turning. I am mildly concerned my IT department will have noticed though, even if I’m not actually active I leave the window open.

It’s video that’s not on a short loop. Where did everyone who didn’t know it was streaming, think it was appearing from ?

Anyway, you’ve now been educated on what streaming video looks like, and how to spot it and keep on the right side of Company rules.

So you can all go back to browsing instead of working and nobody will ever know 😉

If you didn’t pay it any attention (or you’re in another tab, or away from the PC) how do you know it’s not on a short loop? Seems pretty reasonable to assume that it wouldn’t be anything to worry about after all.

I think what annoyed me about it was amount of bandwidth use, to show a video that was about the size of my eye, that could have been done with a fraction of the video quality and no drawback. I’m on unlimited so there’s no cost but there was still bandwidth drain, and tbh I don’t really see how anyone can not understand why people on a cap are miffed.

I can see why people are miffed but I also can’t see why people on a cap wouldn’t be cautious.

As per Northwind I never looked at it, whenever I did it seemed to be a load of people doing tail whips, so I assumed it was on a short loop.

Hard to tell if something that you’re not paying attention to is looping or not, as I’m typing this the video in on the page but is off the top of the screen.

My screen is huge but even then the video is only 8cm wide, I don’t know if I could tell if a video was HD or not at that size – as such a small size it wouldn’t be an obvious contender for using a lot of data.

Phew… that went on a bit…. so glad injury is prevent riding and I can read STW instead on a Sat aft. 😕
Anyhow, thanks OP for noticing (I would never have know about this streaming malarky either) and Mark for cracking on with a fix – I’ve now turned it off in my profile. I did go and check my BT data usage and interestingly have used more in the first 2 weeks of March then I do on average for a month and was therefore well on the way to hitting my (40GB) limit, so thanks again as I too would have been peeved if I had unwittingly exceeded my allowance.

My point was made in reference to work rules that don’t allow the streaming of “non work related video”

Any video streaming would break those rules.

So the video that was streaming on the screen would have been the bit he should have noticed. Not wether it was HD or otherwise.

The upcoming fix will mean it cuts off streaming after 90 seconds. Plus it will only play once on your first visit and then subsequent pages will leave it with a play button for anyone who wants to watch it. That solution will be ready in about 2 weeks. At the moment it is capped by our own delivery system but the time limit on plays is not there yet.

Entertaining thread, this. Maybe I should spit the dummy and flounce off more often. Thanks for the concern, I’m feeling much better now after an afternoon mooching round Switzerland.

At the risk of reigniting the “customer” argument, I think it should be patently obvious to anyone bar the professionally affronted that others aren’t “customers” of mine, from the simple fact that more haven’t been escorted off the premises with a size eight wedged up their situpon. (-: I’m not “representing” anyone other than myself, something I thought I’d been very clear about on several occasions previously.

As for breaking work restrictions, I’d respectfully suggest that if IT usage policy is sufficiently strict that they can issue formal warnings to staff who contravene it inadvertently, then their IT department is negligent in not blocking verboten content.

Anyone else want patronising whilst I’m passing through or are we good for now? (-:

Well, as I always have the window with STW on reduced in width on my work computer so that I can only see the actual text area, with no adverts visible, purely so that it’s easy to disappear it if necessary, there is quite obviously no way at all I’d know that advert was running video that might bring the wrath of IT and my boss down on my head.
As it happens, AFAIAA, some ads are blocked by our firewall, and certainly I get a warning box pop up saying certain content has been blocked, so I don’t think there are any issues at work.
    I *Like* Northwind’s *Like*, BTW. 😀

bizarrely, despite having a fairly agressive ICT regime (I work for a local authority) Epic TV seems to sail straight though it (unlike the ads at the top, which are stopped…).

    Je ne comprends pas.

Whilst I’m glad to see this sort of sorted out I think its still a bit shit it happened. How a casual user like myself is supposed to *know* stuff like this is going to eat up data allowance (piss off ICT departments) I don’t know…

And in my case, auto load a shed load of tabs in one go (STW, snowheads, gmail, yahoo mail, bbc, etc.) and possibly leave several unattended.
Speaker on my work PC is always off. So I wouldn’t have known.
Strangely on the home PC, i get no audio for the epic tv stuff (thought it might have been the setting in chrome, but if it was, how would youtube, vimeo etc. run?).
So had they not been turned off in the “P” settings, I wouldn’t have known, and would also assume that any vid wouldn’t loop.

Already saw the Epic TV vids anyway, when mtb-news.de posted them up (a bit like their version of midweek movies).
