Looking for a van, most prob a T5 or would even consider a Ford Transit custom, budget is 13k max, i want one that looks good, so Sport styling on the transit or the usual VW look on the T5

Everywhere ive looked they ethier dont meet my reqiurments, have spaceship mileage or they seem really overpriced, 08 plate T5’s for 15k (not even good camper ones)

Ive seen 16 plate transit vans with 200k on the clock going for 20k!

This one meets all my requirements, 14 plate Kombi, 124k on the clock, sat nav, air con, elec windows and mirrors, parking sensors etc… looks nice, perfect for a family of three and carting my bike around

Only thing that is niggling me is the price of £10’550 which seems very cheap considering the market and at that price why hasnt it been snapped up?

That might be a hacked account / fake listing.
If it looks to good to be true..

You need to either add 10k to your budget, lower your requirements or buy a Vivaro.

No headlining, which is odd, so may have had damage.
HPI check check a couple of quid?

I’ll be amazed if that isn’t a scam listing. Ask to go and view and see what answer you get. It’s far far too cheap.
It also has the bitdi 180 engine which has a known major flaw that needs a new engine to fix. Avoid this engine. So if the ad was legit it may well need a new engine at £6-8k.
Prices on all vehicles are up, transporters probably pushing 50% up over the last 18 months, kombis like the ad you linked are at the peak of it. New ones are on 12month wait lists so used prices are very strong.
I’ve been buying and selling transporters as a sideline for nearly ten years now, can answer any other questions you have.

    they seem really overpriced,

They are overpriced, I looked at a couple of swb T6’s a few years ago but couldn’t justify the cost. I went for a Caddy Maxi instead and it does 90% of what the transporter would’ve done for around 1/3 of the price

    steveh
    Full Member

@pothead don’t look at the costs now they are far higher than they were back then. Caddy maxi is still less but not 1/3 of the price.

Every car/van I’ve looked at recently is a fair bit more now than an equivalent of similar age and mileage would’ve been a few years ago, Transporters especially so. Glad I’m not looking to buy anything in the near future

The photos in that there eBay ad are ones taken straight from Totally Transporters website, based in Chivenor, Braunton, near Barnstable.

Their website isn’t loading ATM, but their Facebook page is still there.

Either the seller is legit but happened to use the same car park for their photos or it’s a scam.

    Did I mention scam?

Don’t touch it with a barge pole, that model twin turbo had egr cooler problems causing excessive oil use. Could cost 5 or 6 grand to put right.

    Cheers for the replies

Ive reported the listing so will see what happens, no way i would go look at that one at that price as something is deffo off

Not set on buying one straight away so may have to wait till prices settle back down

Have a friend who knows transporters inside out so any i go see ill be taking him along

Don’t touch with a bargepole. I have a 15 plate T5 180 bi turbo highline kombi & Webuyanycar are valuing that at around £22k in the current market.
Mine has got to the stage that its guzzling oil (70K miles) & its going in next week for a fact finding mission.
I’ve ordered a new one & decided to go for the 150ps model this time to avoid the issues in future.

    Fixed it for you

They are overpriced, I looked at a couple of swb T6’s a few years ago but couldn’t justify the cost. I went for a Berlingo Caddy Maxi instead and it does 100% of what the Caddy Maxi Transporter would’ve done for around 1/3 of the price

Used van prices are mental at the moment.

I can’t see prices coming down any time soon, all used vehicles are overpriced and that’s without the crazy van demand.

Yeah, any ebay listing with an email address or phone number in the description is a warning sign, avoid like the plague.

@escrs you’ll be waiting 12 months minimum for prices to start coming down, probably a lot longer. Last time they spiked up they never came down.

    @mos
how much oil is it using and where is it going for the fact finding? There’s not really much finding to do on them if they’re drinking oil, it’s just new engine or strip current down and see if it’s stuck rings (happens on a small number) or totally shot.

Having used a works Berlingo many times they weren’t in the running. They may well do everything a Caddy Maxi can do and are significantly cheaper but it was possibly THE worst thing I’ve ever driven, each to his own I suppose

@escrs – I’m planning to sell my T5 kombi over the next couple of months or so, it’s an 08 plate but I’m not asking £15! for it 😉
2.5tdi 130bhp, 125k miles, FSH, tailgate, and has been converted into camping van (NB not camper!) – insulated and professionally lined (by aforementioned Totally Transporters as it happens; I’m in Devon), curtains, alloys and very slightly lowered on Sportline springs to reduce body roll. But otherwise quite plain looking, so might not be what you’re after.

Mine’s had about 5L in the last 5000 miles.

@mos who is it going to for work? There are very few companies worth giving money too when you are that far gone. Depending on exact usage vw will likely still say it’s within acceptable usage of oil.

@steveh not in a rush to buy one, can wait a couple of years if need be, can save up some more funds in the meantime

    @mos
5L in 5000 miles sounds very familar, my old Audi A4 2.0T used to get through 1 litre every 1100 miles, Audi didnt consider it an issue until it was using a litre every 600 miles!

That’s the same acceptable oil usage across the VAG group I believe, no one else would say it was ok but to VAG vehicles it is ok.

My old 13 plate Kombi is for sale for over £18k + VAT. I sold it to WBAC 2 years ago for £12k + VAT

As I can get what I paid for my Transit Custom Sport 18 months ago, I have been looking at Changing to a newer T6.1
Trouble is well appointed Kombi Highline is around £43k (71 plate delivery miles).
A nice tarted up one ( been looking at the Urban Automotive ) is £55k + VAT
The new sport line Kombi is £70k + VAT
    Crazy money

What are the newer (as in 2021) Bi Turbos like ?
Have they sorted them out ?

They are too new to be certain but all of the 204/199/204 (in bhp as years varied they went up and down a little) don’t seem to have the egr cooler issue the 180 had but do seem more prone to oil usage and definitely have more to go wrong.

It’s going to vw to start with but I suspect it will end up at Darkside in Barnsley.

Retro resus seem to have the best reputation with the 180’s so would be worth a call. Reckon you’re just wasting money sending it to vw first! They’ll tell you consumption is ok assuming they do a oil consumption test.

Pffft, some of my in-laws just paid £12.5k for a 26 year old rusty import Bongo / Friendee without heater, ripped poptop and a very dodgy MOT history…. The VW’s seem good value compared to that.

Everything is crazy at the moment.

Problem is the big fleet companies can’t get hold of any stock so companies like sky, British gas, AA etc are holding onto their vehicles so the market has lower supply = high prices.

Add that to the drive to get a 2016 or newer euro 6 engine and the prices have gone through the roof.

They are expecting 2022 to sort ok out the market as manufacturers are concentrating on popular models only to maximise production.

I’ve just sold my 2006 vw t5 campervan as Bradford are bringing in a clean air tax and want to charge me £9 a day to drive to work. I thought I could buy a euro 6 vw t6 but it was getting ridiculous. Went to look at ones in my budget and they were all dogs.

Ended up buying a 2010 vw t5.1 and my wife will use it to drive to work as she’s not in the zone area and I’ll take the car to work. Only time we ever go to Bradford is when I have to for work.

I’ll have a look in 2022 winter again for a t6 and see if the prices are more in my budget.

As many have mentioned stay well away from the bi turbo models, the egr cooler breaks up and sends metal in to the engine resulting in a new engine required..

I paid 16k for my Transit Custom, had I think 13k miles on it. Very tidy, had some scuffs on the back door resprayed before I bought it, done by the company to make it tidy for me. They sell all sorts of vans, so you can get them to sort you out with pretty much whatever you fancy. Once they know what I wanted the got hold of one that had been used by a florists, so it wasn’t full of cement during its previous like.

They lined up 5 different vans for me to test drive on the day, I tired the all and found the Transit Custom to drive the best.

Darkside Developments have done a video on exactly this. Can be avoided if caught early by replacing the EGR cooler assembly with Pierburg equivalent (about 450 quid). Apparently the 180’s don’t ever make anything like the quoted power figures anyway. The take away for me was to avoid the CFCA engine unless the compression test was ok & the EGR cooler had been changed.

Bought a 62 plate t5 180 bi turbo off a neighbour (and friend) a couple of months ago. He had had it off the first owner 4 years ago and was only selling because he’s moving to Spain and needs a left hooker. He had no issues with it at all and it has done 125Kmiles. Full history and always had issues addressed. Anyway got it for a good price and started thinking about what to do with it kitting out wise. Came across the oil issue and freaked. Asked him about it (not moving for 6 months) and never heard about it or had any consumption issues. Did oil and compression test which were fine. Being ultra cautious and because it was convenient I went to Retro Resus and had the ERG changed and a few other bits. Safe rather than sorry but great service and lovely drive on the way home that included a speeding ticket.
Do your research, get oil and compression test before you buy, FSH is a must, haggle hard.

Its not just van prices (I reckon I could sell my T5 now for roughly what I paid for it 7 years ago) – my Mini Clubman which I bought from a Mini specialist 2 years ago would cost about £3k more to replace with one similar mileage but with a lower spec today looking at AT prices… mental.
