And the **** is going to the bloody Alamo tomorrow. Pence is gonna regret not hitting him with the 25th.

EDIT: Correction, not The Alamo – Alamo the city, which is slightly less inflammatory, I guess!

Wondering what would happen if air force 1 just disappeared.

Or he landed in Texas and got told he was not the president anymore.

Horrid case but the woman is clearly not fit to be charged in normal court of law.

One way or another now he is in the doo-doo personally and professionally up to his neck, and no-one can or will help.

    But, Rudy…

I imagine Pence is a bit worried about his safety and that of his family. He’s in a pretty horrible position.

You have to imagine that if he restricts pardons for his close associates then they will all be shortly contacting the fbi or similar to offer information to help with the plea bargains.

True – I don’t envy him at all. Maybe he’ll chose his colleagues more wisely in the future.

I struggle to muster much sympathy for Pence, he’s a deplorable human himself all bracketed under his religion and “morals”. Don’t forget back in 2016 when Trump got in that there were plenty who were viewing Trump as the lesser of two evils
For the record I don’t wish him or his family harm.

How do we think the next couple of weeks are going to go?

Anyone watching this cracker speak in Texas?! He’s talking non stop grade A shite and is showing no sign of stopping. He’s said “aliens” instead of “immigrants” at least 4 times now. WTF

Given recent experience at gardening businesses, what’s the odds he thinks it’s THE Alamo? 🤣

In general, the next few weeks and months will get better, responsible adults are back in the White House and anxiety will lessen for sane people as they wake up each morning not wondering what insane or irresponsible or criminal move the government has taken.

Interspersed with random acts of terror, many with more bark than bite but a Waco type event is surely inevitable.

For the Republcans the death spiral has begun. They’ve already crawled back under their rock and are back to being consumed by self interest.

If half of Republican voters approve of the putsch that means that over 30 million American citizens have been radicalized and they have been armed with machine guns by the Republican party. Open carry will be banned within months, it will happen as a reaction to the inevitable Waco type event.

Sorry, that’s not going to happen.

Multiple horrific events have been met with huge resistance to any gun control.

@nickewen – aliens is a synonym for non-Americans not ET.

Thanks Whitestone that makes a bit more sense now. 😂

He used the term aliens/immigrants interchangeably and I thought he’d lost it (even more).

    Matt,

Fair enough but we haven’t seen significant conflict with Government agencies since Waco and the Oklahoma bombing. Ill stick my neck out and say open carry of long guns (at least) will be banned by the end of the year.

How ironic that the Police over reaction to black protests from Ferguson onwards may have provided the training for the conflicts to come.

Ferguson should be twinned with Fallujah. The tactics used in Ferguson against mostly peacefully black protesters were learnt fighting the early incarnations of Isis in Fallujah. As were the tanks and combat gear, some of which was probably army surplus from that actual battle.

I say ironic when I mean profound.

    Much to my amazement……

Very much so, but they need rid of him for their medium/long term aspirations, so the motivation is there

Well shiver me timbers. I’ll believe it when I see it. I absolutely think the top brass Rs want Trump to go away, but they need to do it in a way that doesn’t alienate* his base. I don’t know how they do that – the racists, insurrection apologists and other QAnon crazies make up a staggering proportion of his voters.

*Nickewen this is nothing to do with martians either 😛

I reckon the plan is to delay impeachment trial until Dems take control. Then they’ll have the numbers to do it without Rep help, so they can cling on to that base if they want.

    dantsw13

No they don’t. 2/3 majority for impeachment. 16 Rs need to vote to convict him.

House Republican Conference chair Liz Cheney: ‘I will vote to impeach the President’

Its gathering speed. there will be a tipping point at which its better for republicans to ditch trump and when that point is reached this will become a flood.

If those two are open to / in favour of impeachment than maybe we are at the tipping point. No one will want to be the last trump acolyte

Bear in mind that potentially the reason (the source for) that article has been given to the press is to ‘test the water’ among Mitch’s colleagues. It gets Rs talking but if Trump (or anyone) asks, McConnell can claim it’s fake news, he never said that. Now McConnell goes into hiding for a few days until the dust settles. He’s a snake.

But hey, if it gets people thinking / talking then maybe it’ll achieve something.

It’s all about funding and support base, combined. I think many of the R’s will have support from pac’s of votes who provide funding and support. If the funding starts to trickle away they will start to change their allegiances. That and them not wanting to be one of a minority in the remaining party.

    dantsw13

Cheney has been saying that for days. She’s in the house, where they vote to impeach by a simple majority, which the Dems have.

Senate is 50/50 R/D and they need 2/3 there to convict.

I think the next election cycle is lost to the GOP whatever happens. If they appeal to Dons base, moderates will vote D. If they drop him, the base won’t vote.

They need to decide what they actually stand for and move forward.

Better to do it now, like ripping off a plaster and they’ve got 4 years to get them back than have it dragging on towards the next election cycle.

Actually, that starts in about 2 years in their **** up system doesn’t it! But yeah, hoping this really starts to snowball.

Reps still to terrified of Trumps base

Until Qanon is no longer a thing then they wont move off it

As we pour scorn and disgust (rightly so) on a subsection of Americans beliefs and actions I fear we have been on the same trajectory since before the Brexit vote ultimately split the uk, and I’m not referring to the vote split between devolved nation states rather the split between two sections of society, the trump/Brexit vote & their beliefs vs everyone else who is deemed a traitor.

I really don’t know, the GOP had the appetite for a deal with the devil before, Trump might be too toxic for a 2024 run himself, but his base of nutters can potentially swing an election.
So he might be talked (paid) into endorsing a Rep’ presidential candidate in four years?

Alternatively, if he avoids prosecution, he could set up a 3rd Alt right party, or lend support to one if he’s ineligible for the presidency, thereby helping to split the right and keeping the Republicans out of power for most of the 20s…

He weilds just enough influence to piss on the GOP’s chips for the next decade or give them a shot in four years… If he can stay out of prison.

That ABC News article on QAnon is pretty decent. Concurs with what I’ve read in other articles and on boards etc: Q is Jim Watkins (possibly with other authors).

There have been other tells, such as Watkins and Q using similar language and both sharing a hobby of collecting fancy wooden fountain pens.

The route to keeping Trump’s base on side, and get back some of the more sensible right wing voters, is Ivanka in 2024. The Republicans can have two campaigns, hers and his, but one candidate… her. Their support will be split, but I can see a few paths to uniting them at the polling both. A running mate for Ivanka that’s seen as a moderate, for example, but with the blessing of President Trump.

The problem there is that Jared Kushner is a creepy Jewish guy and a lot of the base voters are racist bigots. I don’t know if you’ve seen the stuff posted online about her marrying him, but it’s nasty race-traitor stuff. They are basically wealthy New York liberals whose hearts aren’t really in the race-war stuff. I can’t see her getting anywhere as a candidate, she has no base.
