  • Tyre slip on rim solutions please

Went for a short ride yesterday, and managed to rip 3 valve stems off on my innertubes, resulting in a walk home. Fairly sure it was due to the tyres slipping on the rims. Any solutions?
The tyres are conti diesel 2.5", talc'd, possibly too small tubes.

    cheers a.

Yo do have rim tape on the rims too don't you?

What pressure are you running the tyres at? Also – any grease or anything on the tyre / wheel interface? What size tubes then?

    Rim strips yes.
No to grease on the bead.
Tubes are dh but not sure what size. Poss maximum 2.2" so slightly over inflated. Was running about 35psi, but the last one was with a mini pump to get me home so possibly less.

Spray a little hairspray around the bead of the tyre before you fit it to the rim. Worked for me resurrecting an old porcupine that was slipping…

Are you using Presta valved tubes by any chance?

ive had the same problem with Gravs, only i went through about 10 tubes before i worked it out.

front wheel flatting on steep descents over and over.

it was when the rubber had worn off on the bead, and the fabric underneath had polished.
bought regular folding contis, rather than the fabricy puncture protection ones since, and not having any probs.

use it as an excuse to get some racekings 😀 (theyre like velcro)

Used to get this with conti's and plastic rim strips, swithced to velox
    cotton and no more slipping!

I take it you have the little screw on washer thingy on the valve stem

Using schraeder tubes so no locking nuts on the tubes. Will give hairspray a go if I can cheekily steal some from the wife 🙂
Not sure what the rim strip is, will check later.

    Cheers a.

This may seem a tad silly but it does work, use a zip tie round the tyre and the rim with it running on the carcass between the treads.

Works a treat if all else fails, though it was on the back – any tyre that slack on the rim I wouldn't want on the front.

or is it your tubes 'sticking' to the tyre?

Schwalbe do schrader valve tubes that came with locking nuts like you have on presta valves.

Might not solve your problem but should help!

had this on some fire xc pros, 4 dead tubes in one ride. are yours kevlar beads? mine went slack after a while and don't grip the rim properly

once it started my only real solution was new tyres

Don't think the tubes are sticking to the tyres as plenty of talc in there.
Will try to get some schwalbe inners then.
Doubt the're Kevlar beads, but the tyres were secondhand so stretch could be a possibility.

roughen the rim and the tyre up with sandpaper?

Either the tyre or the rim isn't the correct diameter.

If the tyres are part worn then best guess is that the bead has gone baggy. As mentioned above, the only real answer is new tyres.

I had this with brand new tyres{intense 909} on brand new rims {721's} both front and back last season,I've bought some maxxis ardents {steel bead } in hope to fix it for this season

The rims are alex fms dm24 if that means owt?

Will try the hairspray/ roughening the rim and bead & some larger tubes aswell. Would be a pity if the tyres are dead due to "baggy beads" as quite like the grip they had.

If non of the above look forward to a which 2.5" tyre thread 😉

    cheers for the suggestions.
    Thanks a.

Sounds like an excuse to buy a Stans kit.

give the tubes a good talcing up. Stops the tube sticking to the tyre

Update: Sourced some appropriately sized DH tubes. Lots of talc as well and no issues with the ride yesterday.
    Cheers a 🙂
