I’m restoring a 1939 Phillips Military Roadster and I’m struggling to work out what size tyres it should be wearing.
When I bought the bike it was fitted with a pair of 650x35A – 26×1 3/8 tyres (that’s what’s written on the side wall). Now these tyres fit but they are way too skinny for the bike. It would originally have been fitted with something not dissimilar to modern mountain bike tyres.

I was told that Butcher Bike tyres would be the ones to go for so I bought a pair marked up as 26x2x1 3/4 but these are not even close to fitting on the rims, they would need to be around two inches bigger before they would go on. I also tried a Panaracer 26×1.95 that I had in the shed, that’s about as far away from fitting at the butcher bike tyre is.

    Can anyone help?

    Try a 650B tyre.
