Tyre choice for MTB use on road

So I’ve handed my Cove Handjob to youngest son who will use it on road. (His dyspraxia makes a road bike a non-starter…lots of wobbles)
What are the fastest 26″ tyres out there?

Continental Town and Country (?) although not hugely fast will last for ages.

Schwalbe. Kojak for speed or Big Apple for comfort.

Big apples +1…. By far the comfiest tyres for road. They are large volume tyres so can be run at low pressures giving great grip and bump absorption. Roll really quick to. Quite hard to find except on the interwebz.

The super motos are pretty similar too.

Got the Michelins from CR for a tenner each and are really chuffed with them at a sensible price too.

Kojak for me but Big Apple/Supermoto would probably make a lot of sense here- very forgiving, run at a sensible pressure they’ve got stupendous grip in the dry and they very stable if you screw up/hit a pothole etc.

Also, they look bad-ass. And mtbs with skinny tyres always look stupid.

Definitely the Sport Contact – it’s basically a big 26″ road tyre!

Kojak of the 2.0 width variety.

Scwalbe Land .Cruisers? Cheap as chips and won’t puncture in my experience. Will cope with light off road duties too.

Oh aye, I’ve got a set of the narrower Kojaks going spare as I just scrapped my old commuter- tbf I don’t think they’re the right choice here, fatter would make more sense, but if you want light and fast they are light and fast so feel free to drop me a line 😉

2″ Kojacks.
Now ditched the 36t inner & running 10spd 48 / 36-11.
It hustles along almost as quick as a road bike.
Fast but not very comfy.
Big Apples would be my preference.

DMR Moto – does the longest skids of any known tyre

I use schwable marathon plus on my mtb commuter, they have a Kevlar lining which makes them pretty puncture proof, they are heavier though. And go as thin a you can for your rim.

Edit: might give the contis a try when the above wear out.

Schwalbe City Jets are a decent road mtb tyre. I’ve used 1.5s, but you can get them in 1.9s that would probably be more suitable.

Disagree with the recommendation for big apples, terrible grip in the wet. Kojak’s are much better and usually pretty cheap.

+1 for Schwalbe City Jets. 1.5″ here for a bit more comfort. Cheap,durable, fairly puncture resistant on my gravely/road commute. Been using them for years and can ping along when pumped up.
