I have Training Peaks workouts on my Garmin Edge 820 and when I ride them on my Tacx Neo 2 they are done in ERG mode as they state % of FTP. Now this works well for most sessions, but I have a workout that is 1 minute at maximum possible wattage. This is currently marked as 100% to 200% of FTP, but given the Tacx will auto adjust the wattage it defeats the object of the test.

Is there a way to switch off ERG mode whilst you are using the Garmin Edge 820 to control the Tacx Neo 2 or failing being able to enable / disable whilst riding to be able to switch off ERG mode before doing the workout and just perform the ride using a fixed slope value?

I had a similar experience the other night with my Wahoo computer and Elite smart trainer. It rammed it to the average between top and bottom and there was no way I could hold the middle of the suggested range. It ground to a halt….

On my Wahoo Elemnt Bolt one of the screens allows me to change the mode. So i can switch between selected a planned workout, resistance mode or manually adjusting the power level. I think I either had to accept it was erg mode for the full work out or manually follow what I had planned in resistance mode, using the gears to suit. Like the old days 😉

Is there a screen on the Garmin that allows you to cycle between modes? What if you don’t want to do the Training Peaks workout?

Ah, having re-read your post, I haven’t answered your question, just realised I was looking for the same answer as you 🙂

I have subsequently discovered it is not possible. You either do a workout in ERG mode or you just set a slope and ride that. Changing mid workout is not possible.

I haven’t had much joy with FulGaz (issues with video even when downloaded) but I do like the way you can ride a video based on a workout. So you could just set a slope of 2% and then ride and use the gears to make it as hard or as easy as you want.

could you edit the workout to allow “free riding” during that time ? (You can on zwift workouts and they’re pretty basic – maybe you could import the rides into zwift anyway, if you use it)

I don’t see a free riding option in training peaks. Which is a shame as that would be great for when you are doing a test. You could use the ERG for the warm up and recovery parts of the test, but during the test the trainer switches off ERG so you can go as hard as possible without the trainer auto adjusting the watts.
