  • Tubeless road tyres … What’s the current favourite?

Now I have two sets of wheels for my Pickenflick, I’m going to set one up for primarily road riding.

What’s good in 28-32ish flavour, possibly with a very light tread for very occasional light off road? Tubeless? Under £60 a pair?

(The other wheels are shod with WTB Resolute, which will be on the bike the majority of the time, so these wheels/tyres do not need lots of off-road capability)

I’ve got 32mm vitoria voyager hypers on my commuter. Don’t think they were advertised as tubeless but they went up on a trackpump fine. I’m pretty scrawny so get away with 50psi, they hold pressure okay, maybe need topping up every 3 to 4 weeks. I think they were £40 a pair off on one. Roll slightly better and twice the wet weather grip of the gatorskins they replaced. Not tried much else but they seem fine on my gravel/road commute.

Topping up means with air, I’ve done 4 months/1k without touching sealant.

I had a look at the new Good Year tubeless tyres earlier in the week, they look interesting. Haven’t had chance to try them yet.

I’m using Hutchinson Sector 32s. They’re great. Light, fast and easy tubeless.

G one/g one speed are really nice but quite pricey. Clement Strada USH 32 are decent and have a bit of tread, have been good on wet leafy lanes recently. Went up easily just with a track pump & still only £21 on PX:

    These do look good.

How do you think they are in terms of rolling resistance compared, say, to a 28c slick? And what’s the weight like?

I had Vittoria voyager hypers on tubeless rims (primes) and they burst of the rim when JRA. obviously rims are different and these were 38mm version, but just thought I’d mention it. Running panaracer gravel king slicks now which are nice.

G One Speeds have been very good. Faster than I expected on club rides and fine in the wet. Mine mounted easily on non-tubeless ksyriums.

I fitted a set of Hutchinson Fusion 5 all seasons at Christmas. They have been great so far even on the icy mornings we have had this week. I have only done a few hundred miles on them so can’t comment on wear. Other than they don’t seem to have. They were easy to fit and went up easy but i do have a compressor which makes life very easy.

Pot luck as to whether they blow off the rim or not.

    Hutchinson Sectors FTW.

You really don’t need tread for light off road and a very light tread is going to make even less difference. I ride all year round off road (gravel and single track) on road slick tyres without any issues.

Continental GP5000 TL for me, lovely tyres – had Sector 28 before, horrible tyres.

Specialised 2bliss – used them for Strade bianche and all winter this year, and they’ve been excellent

    Recommend: Schwalbe G-One Speed.

Don’t recommend: Hutchinson Fusion5 11Storm. After less than 100 miles, I punctured one on a small pothole. Only a small puncture, but it wouldn’t seal (with Stan’s), and I couldn’t get anchovies to stay in. They just blew out as I blew the tyre up.

IRC RBCC 28 Best tyre I have used. Fast rolling, grips like the proverbial and long lasting. Comfy as hell too! No punctures in 18 months.

Hutchinson Fusion 5 11storm 25mm on the summer bike. Great feel, supple & fast rolling plus grippy – slightly more so in both respects than the GP4000 II’s that were on before. 2,500 miles so far – no obvious visible wear and only one puncture (during ride london this year which was a total puncture fest). As they have sat over winter and lost pressure several small “weeps” of sealant through holes in the tyre are visible so the tubless thing has clearly done its job and saved a few punctures over the year! Very happy with these tyres.

Hutchingson Fusion 5 11 storm all season 28mm on the winter / commuter bike – only a few hundred miles so far but similar to the summer tyres they feel good, fast rolling, grippy.

Both went up easily with only a track pump and I’d buy again, so yes, recommended.

Fusion 5 11Storm on my commuter. The rubber just feels grippy to touch and they seem good on the road. I’ve had no success repairing any road tubeless tyres regardless of brand but sealant has at least allowed me to get home without needing to put a tube in.

I use Schwalbe Pro Ones on the race bike but I have a pair of Hutchinson Galaktiks ready to go also which seem similarly tacky to the 11Storms.

I’d be heading for the 11Storms or something more heavy duty than Pro Ones if you’re intending some light off road. Not that Pro Ones are especially fragile but they are really a race tyre rather than a gravel/mixed use tyre.

Not that Pro Ones are especially fragile

I know it’s coming to the end of panto season but, “Oh yes they are !”
The older “One” was OK but the pro one have had multiple holes round my way (flinty ground and some of that washes onto roads of course but even so, those are probably the most flimsy road tyres I’ve used). I suppose they may have beefed them up since their release (I got mine a while ago) but I’m not buying again

Secteur/Sector, fusion, those IRC ones above and spesh roubaix pro all fare much better IME

    Hutchinson Fusion 5 Galactic.
The best tubeless road tyre by far if a little fragile!
Split one on a sportiff but other than that fast, light and smooth!
Currently running the 4 seasons which also run lovely.
Maybe try the ‘performance’ version for a good middle ground?
    Thanks,
    Max

Question for the Fusion 5 Storm users – what pressure are you using?

I’ve got a 28mm on the back of my winter roadie. Took an initial punt of 70psi based on my previous Schwalbe Ones (75psi in a 25mm) and it felt awful – like pedaling through treacle. Now worked up to 90 and it still feels slow, but any harder and it’s terrible for grip.

Feels wrong to be running a big tyre like that so hard, so I figure I’m missing something!

I’ve got the schwalbe pro ones on my canyon and hutchinson fusion 5 storms on my genesis.

Schwalbes are lovely. Very supple and fast with plenty of grip. Very easy to cut up though.

I’ve had the hutchinson on since early November and have been really impressed. Very tough, fast and grippy.

    Both come in 28 flavour.

The clements weigh 340g according to the internet, didn’t bother weighing before I fitted them. They don’t feel especially sluggish or difficult to get going. Absorb road buzz nicely, bit less supple than the g one speed but the payoff is they cut up much less. Will probably switch back to 35mm g ones once the mudguards come off. If you want something around the 28mm mark there’s probably nicer rolling but still hard wearing slick tubeless tyres like the IRC stuff.
