  • Trailer friendly routes near Inverness?

    Hi,

We’re up in Inverness for a few days at New Year. Has anyone got any recommendations for kids trailer friendly routes in the area? Happy either off road or quiet road routes (all weather dependent!).

There are a few routes in Bike Scotland Book 2. One heads out east from Inverness to Culloden then over to Daviot and back via Loch Ashie. There’s another one on the back roads on the east side of Loch Ness. Also a loop on the Black Isle from Fortrose to Cromarty. Any thoughts on those would be appreciated.

There’s a fairly new cycle route that runs from Torbreck just outside Inverness to the village of Dores at the end of Loch Ness. Some of the route runs right along side the road but is on its own dedicated Tarmac cycle and walking lane. There is a good pub at dores but it’s very busy so if you plan to eat best to book.
There is a small fun cycling loop off road at the community woodland at Abriachan on the other side of Loch Ness. Some nice walks and a tree house for kids to play in.

The Black Isle is nice, plenty of quiet roads. Cromarty and Rosemarkie are nice wee towns with cafes etc, and you could look for dolphins at Chanonry Point.

Also the Great Glen Way – mostly decent gravel paths, so fine for a trailer, though it would involve a steep hill out of Inverness. It passes by Abriachan, so you could link it to the trails there.

Any of the wee roads South if Loch Ness will be great. Wander up by Loch Ruthven etc.

The GGW will be really muddy heading out of Inverness.

If you have transport then heading down to Aviemore will give you loads of options in and around Rothiemurchus

Cheers for the tips. A ride to Dores and a loop around Cromarty sound like good bets.

Scotroutes – we’ll probably stop at Aviemore tomorrow on the way up. Rothiemurcus will be nice.

Check first thing but the Aviemore – Glenmore road is currently closed (flooded) at Rothiemurchus Fish Farm. You should be able to get up if you come off the A9 at Kingussie and approach via Kincraig/Feshie Bridge/Inshriach

Good shout, I’ll need to check the travel details anyway for tomorrow due to all this crazy weather as the “flooding” thread will testify.
