I have a 10 year old Ford Focus 2.0TDCI which is due its timing belt/chain replacement. I think but I am not sure that it is a timing chain. If it is a chain is it worth getting it replaced?
The car runs well and I see no reason at the moment why I would be getting rid of it. But it is only worth £2000 ish and therefore I am reluctant to fork out £500 on it. The likely hood is that within the next couple of years I will be looking for a replacement car anyway.
    Any thoughts?

    it should be a belt.

Not spending 500 quid could very well lead to you spending a few grand much sooner – and your focus being worth 50-100 quid.

the time based intervals on fords seems to be imagineered well ….. i took a belt off a 10 year old escort that had done 44k miles about 10 years ago …. it was in horrendous condition.

Also it should not be 500 quid for a timing belt , find an independant garage for a price. if your located in cults as per your moniker – try malcolm road motors in culter.

Agree with Trail Rat. If there is nothing else wrong with the car then spending money on a cambelt service is worth it. As stated above if it fails your car is worth scrap value.
If you change the car then you could end up with a lemon costing you more or at the very best you will lose a lot more than the cost of a cambelt change within the first year in depreciation.

When I got the timing belt done in my Focus I think it cost around £300, including a service. One of the advantages of the Focus is that the timing belt is quite easy to access, and therefore not too costly to replace.

    Find an independent.

Had one done for £200 including water pump on a Mondeo. Ford independent specialist.
