  • Tibial Plateau fractures – any advice?

    Following my ambulance chaser email, it seems I have a tibial plateau fracture, and waiting to hear from consultant orthopods what the plan is. Two opinions from different registrars on different shifts 1 operate to pin…2 let it heal on its own.
    Potential confounding factor is I had an aclr on same knee 4 years ago, and well recovered.
    I’m not sure at the moment how severe the fracture is (but hopefully not so bad) or exact topography, and if any acl or other soft tissue impacts in the knee.
    I’m keen for an mri before they go looking if they decide to pin it.

    Anyone had one and any thoughts on questions to ask, and best outcomes. I have looked at pubmed, and opinions seem to vary there as well.

    Im pretty sure there has been a thread about this in the past couple of months. Im sure someone did it mmma training. A search will turn it up i think.

    I read this as Tibetan Plateau fractures. I know that STW has some niche threads so I was ready to contact my geophysics friends.

    However you have it done, good physio, good physio, good physio

    Wife’s was 10mm depressed, plated and pinned at almost 2 weeks, mostly because she was mis diagnosed as ligament damage.
    Daily pain, Knee and hip replacement will ultimately be likely as a result.
    Others have better results though 😉

    Mine was left to heal without surgery and as far as I can tell healed well. Problem is once that healed I had to have my ACL reconstruction and lateral tenodesis surgery so I’ve been on and off crutches and not done any sport in 7 months now

    The result of that is I can’t really accurately tell if the pain and limited mobility I have is due to the ACL, the LT or the tibia (or fibia which I also broke).

    The only useful thing I can say is I’ve had an X-ray and the knee specialist said it had healed well 2 months ago just after my ACL surgery

    Since you’ve had an ACL reconstruction I’ll add that the fracture recovery pre surgery was a walk in the park compared to the nightmare that is the ACL rehab so if you handled that you’ll survive this. Of course if you go surgical the recovery will probably be a lot worse

    Thanks Bearback Sounds like your wife has had a tough time and unlucky with the diagnosis. Good warning to get a clear story as soon as possible. I hope she fares well.

    Thanks ChrisHC, I read the other thread, and it sounds like you are on a tough journey. I hope that now you’ve had both surgeries you can progress and rehab to a good outcome. As Bearback says – physio physio for the ACL too. Cycling was instrumental in my rehab, from slow beginnings and taking time listening to my body when to push on a little at a time. Good luck with your rehab. Don’t know if yours will resemble my ACL rehab, but happy to answer any Qs on the way

    For me I am waiting to hear what the orthopods recommend and hoping I guess that it is not surgery..

    Didn’t post on chris777 as it was all a bit raw… Sweamrs managed to suffer a pretty traumatic boot top tib/fib skiing a blue run in Canada in January….

    We’re now 6 months post fracture and she’s well on her way to recovery… Hers was so bad she was in the Ortho ward for almost 2 weeks so surgery was always the outcome (3 seperate operations….)

    I can offer no opinions on surgery vs conservative but I would say either way get moving as soon as you can. We had the additional fun of DVT due to no enough movement.

    Joined this club again last week
    Rt knee this time.
    I’m in a cast will review Thursday on whether or not to operate.
    it’s a long recovery, don’t push it steady away try and not to get too frustrated ,as hard as that is, about not being able to bike
