Heading just north of Bath (Castle Coombe) for a couple of days next week with Mrs Ready. Forecast is going to be HOT! Worth taking the bikes? Or should I go for some touristy days?

There’s a few bridle paths around Combe, Ford, North Wraxall that you can link up with all the lanes around there, but it’s as much fun to walk around there and take advantage of the pubs and tea rooms dotted around the place. There’s a good roughly circular walk that you can do, with bits you can add or subtract to suit, starting in Castle Combe you can go over the bridge at the far end of the village towards Long Dean then out to the A420 Bristol Road to Ford, where you can stop at the White Hart pub for beer and food. If you want to extend that, you can walk along the Colerne road for a bit, then take a footpath along the Bybrook to Slaughterford, then follow the lane back to Ford and the pub, the church in Slaughterford is worth having a shufti at, it was trashed by Cromwell, and rebuilt in Victorian times, my grandparents are buried there.
From Ford you cross back over the A420 into Park Lane, taking the path up the side of the valley, across a stream, them steeply up the other side of the valley to a junction, where you can drop down back into Castle Combe via a path that starts just along the road that goes to your left towards West Kington, and which comes out close to the bridge you started out on, or you can carry on along that road for about a mile, until you get to a very sharp bend, where a byway goes off to your right, which takes you over a lovely old clapper bridge over the Bybrook, where you can take a path along the river to Nettleton Mill, then back over the Castle Hotel golf course into Castle Combe, or carry on up the byway to the T-junction to Nettleton, take the road to your right and walk for about a quarter of a mile to another junction and Fosse Farmhouse, a restaurant/hotel/tearoom, for a cream tea, where you can take the lane opposite which takes you down to Nettleton Mill and back to Castle Combe.
Some of the route follows the Macmillan Way.
If you Google Fosse Farmhouse/Anime you’ll see pictures of it and the anime Kiniro Mosaic which it features in!
It also belongs to a close friend. 😀
Fosse Farmhouse is marked as Lugbury Farm on the OS map, the previous owner took the name to another farm along the road.
