My sister used to live in Santander and a popular drink was red wine and cola. Can’t remember what it was called, but that was surprisingly pleasant.

When I prepare food for a big day ride I make Elvis sandwiches for the group. Crispy cob (bread roll), butter, streaky bacon, crunchy peanut butter, apricot conserve. All the necessary food groups in one irresistible bundle.

Norwegian brown cheese on ginger nut biscuits. I swear there’s crack cocaine in that cheese. Once I start on this stuff I’m strangely compelled to eat the lot.

Mrs Binners spent a lot of time working out in Spain. She swears by this. It is herself who bought the sparkling Shiraz.

While we’re on the subject, chilled red wine sounds wrong, but this stuff is bloody great in the sun, straight out of the fridge

I haven’t tried it (slightly daren’t) but a mate said that the cause of him putting on a LOT of weight one year was catering-size tubs of coronation chicken, scooped up with bourbon biscuits

OK, I’ll be honest – I thought that this was utter bollocks. But I happen to have both strong cheese and chocolate digestives and I conducted an experiment.

Long story short, it’s bloody brilliant. Can’t believe I’ve never tried this before.

Marmite and raspberry jam on toast. You need the marmite on quite thick to cut through the sweetness of the jam.

Put a mince pie in the oven, get it lovely and warm. Pop the top off when it comes out and put a decent slice of stilton inside.

This combination has been responsible for most of my Christmas weight gain since it was shown to me many years ago.
