  • "The official" when is the iphone 7 or 6s due – what upgrades over 6?

Just wondering if folk happen to know when the new iphone is released.

I hope they call it a 7 (lucky number) and when will it be due to the public to fight over at a store near me?

Also wondering if to go for a standard 6 or the new model depending on spec so if you know of the spec upgrades then a list would be mighty helpful.

I have only owned one iphone being a 5 and most definitely found it to be the best phone ever that I have used. sad but true.

I’m not sure I want to support Apple’s way of treating their staff at factories though after watching that documentary.
My justifying it, is that all factories for all branded electronics would surely be bad if not just as…?

Interesting stuff Pete, thanks for the speedy reply.

I totally missed this site off my list.

The staff thing is a tricky one, they could definitely do a lot more but I’d bet all of the large consumer electronics manufacturers have a similar issue and it’s not helped with the Chinese fabricating reports etc., short of having inspectors permanently based at the factory the situation isn’t going to improve without the factory owners helping.

As for the phone, I was hoping they’d offer a new 4″ model so bummed that doesn’t seem likely now.

it’ll be a 6s, it’ll look pretty much the same as a 6 with a speed boost. mid september launch, end of september shipping.

I’ll keep my 6 for another year until the 8 is launched.

Would be nice if it was smaller. I don’t want to have a tablet in my pocket or have to carry a bag.

Yeah, I am still have a 4s, it is a good size IMO, I would have been much more interested in a 4″ screen version.

After being with Android virtually from the beginning, I’m getting tempted by the new iPhones, mainly because of the anti-Googleness of the recent pronouncements from Cupertino, and the fact they finally have some decent sized screens, 4″ – ha!

No back button though – how that work?

i think the 5 was my peak phone moment. Not too big, not too small. It finally just works. (Discounting the faulty off button and appalling battery life)

Yep same here. I don’t want anything bigger than a 5 so I’ll stick with that.

Some people like their phones to be pocket devices and don’t want to be forced down the route of ever expanding screen size. There is a diminishing choice of decent phones who haven’t followed the supersize fashion and an ignored market segment.

have you checked your serial number against the battery recall?

I can fit my iPhone 6 is my pocket quite easily, you must have really small pockets.

OP the site @pete linked to is excellent. I love my 6 and having spent a few weeks getting used to it wished I’d got a 6+. I don’t expect big changes to iPhone, rumour is the iPad Pro (much larger screen) will be the big announcement in a week or so. As such I’ll stick with my phone for the time being. As an aide I sued the phone quite a lot for web browsing / email messaging and get 2 days battery life. If users are still on a 5 they should change the battery at an Apple Store or at least get it tested there.

Have you got particularly small pockets? Because my daily driver Nexus 5 + large case fit in all of my pockets as does a Note 4. Maybe the diminishing choice reflects the fact that the market segment is small and, well, bigger screens are just better.

    I’ve a 6 plus as well as the 6. It’s bloody massive.

Yup I succumbed to a 6 a month or so ago, simply because the Mrs wanted my 5s. TBH I really liked the 5s and yet the 6 now feels right. I too don’t want a larger screen/overall size increase. Any larger would be a huge step backwards and thats what the 6+ is all about innit. As is the 6 fits in my cycling jersey pockets perfectly, it also fits into my Rapha wallet (but not in the little pocket thats in there, just in the large pocket) any larger and I’m going to get annoyed with Apple. As is I think Rapha have already altered the size of their zipped secure pockets in the Pro Team range to accommodate the size of the 6…

And yes, I bought a Gold one 😀

I’m struggling to work out why anyone would want a 4″ display size in modern phones. 4.5 – 5″ is perfect for fitting in your pocket and being a usable size.

Still have an ageing 4s. I want a new phone as some apps take an age to load but I don’t need one. I am trying really hard not to be a consumerist arsehole and only get a new one when I actually wear out the current one and consign it to landfill (or wherever dead phones go to die).

I use my iPhone (a 4s as it’s work-supplied so can’t upgrade at the mo) primarily for calls and texts, the odd bit of Candy Crush and occasional web-browsing (but things like looking up an address rather than just surfing forums etc.). Web surfing and games playing I use either an iPad Air or PC for, both better tools for the job than an iPhone 6 or 6+ IMO. Sure, if I could only have one device I’d likely go for an iPhone 6 (I’m pretty sure I couldn’t live with the 6+’s size for day to day use as a phone) but otherwise it’s either a compromise or overkill depending on what I’m trying to do.

I also think I’m not alone or even that much of a niche market, if you can afford an iPhone 6 you probably also have an iPad and/or a PC/Mac. I guess Apple know the market better than me though so if they’ve scrapped plans for a 4″ 6c then it’s probably too niche (or they’re just not bothered as the margins would be smaller and they’re already making billions from larger format phones).

All electronics but also a very large percentage of foreign made clothing, gadgets, household goods, etc etc etc

I’m afraid that is the reality of the consumerist capitalist world.
And that’s before you get into the environmental damage.

Still on a 4s here. I don’t find it too bad. I keep things fairly tight on it though. App switcher kept clear. Limited background apps. Limited notifications. Fancy effects turned off.

consign it to landfill (or wherever dead phones go to die).

Parents or in-laws in my case. 🙂

Yeah, it’s not too bad really and I also try to minimise apps opens etc. Facebook app is a bit slow but I don’t use that much. I use the audible audiobook app a lot and that is dreadfully slow to open now (well 15-20 seconds usually) but it might just be a terribly written app.

Giving it to my parent’s in law would means consigning myself to hours of pain – more than happy with them still using an old Nokia 3210 (really!). They were literally the last household in the country to be renting a black and white telly from radio rentals so this true to form!

It’s a shame they can’t introduce some sort of notification indicator as on Samsungs. Sure the flash will blink twice on a notification but a multicoloured light that’ll flash until the notification has been read would be great.

I just wish they’d double the battery capacity. My 6 has the best battery yet but I’d still prefer more power than less weight.

there are some really slick battery cases out there.

Yes a 5″ 6s or 7 would do spot on size wise.

As for the fair trade and ethics over production of these items, I was perhaps naive when I rushed to get a new phone for a trip that I needed that instant, the guys in the o2 store even let me finish up after closing time as it was urgent I had a moby on a network with good signal coverage where I was travelling.
It was only 2yrs later when I saw the documentary on how poorly etc that these factory workers are submitted to that I thought differently on the whole Apple thing.

I also used to have an ipad 3rd gen as my home set up.
I found my 5 to be excellent on battery even if at times I was charging 5 times a day to keep it topped up and lasted a hell of a long time and is still going strong with it’s new owner.

It just seems to be a simple enough interface and smooth software operating system and not patronising all of the time.
I think that’s one of the reasons why Apple products have succeeded, a no nonsense smartphone and without too many glitches.

So it will certainly be interesting if the price increases for the new coming iphone due to it’s inherent cost in manufacturing with 7000 series alloy.

Let’s see, tbh the least they could do is decrease the rrp by 25% and pay their staff in factories a 30% rise and keep everyone happy. I mean they’d hardly notice a difference to their total profit per annum.

I’ve taken to carrying round a battery pack for mine, admittedly its only a 4s but it gets used all day for work using a specialist app and taking pictures with it constantly kills the battery.

The benefits of the battery pack is its flexible so can use also with my personal phone, tablet, e-reader etc.
When I was in Singapore last year you would see virtually everyone using a separate batterypack no matter what brand or size of phone they owned.

iPhones generally get passed down the family food chain, or used as an iPod Touch, or sold on.
As far as the factory conditions of assembly staff is concerned, Foxcomm, who are one of the biggest assemblers of Apple mobile devices, also assemble the products of practically every other phone manufacturer in the market, and Apple have taken a major lead in demanding that their chosen partners up their game in both worker conditions and pay.
Foxcomm is huge, the size of a small city, employing somewhere around 100,000 people, and also produce TV’s, games consoles and other consumer electronics, so anyone wanting to find an ‘ethical’ alternative is going to be shit out of luck, I think.

I rang EE after an early upgrade a few weeks back and the guy I spoke to told me to hold on until Oct as the iPhone 7 would be out by then and all the current top end Android models would be discounted. With any luck the new Nexus will be out then as well so I can get one of those!

I too have an ageing 4S and reluctant to upgrade to a bigger size screen. Am in the process of saving for a new one though and will just have to put up with it, though I’m also very slightly tempted to get an Apple watch too as I think I’d find it very useful when out and about at events that I go to. Not in any hurry so happy to wait for a new version when it’s launched or soon after.

No it won’t, you’ll have to wait until October 2016 if you want an iPhone 7/7+. What will be announced in a week or two’s time will be the 6s/6s+, exactly the same procedure as all the previous models; 3G/3Gs/4/4s/5/5s/6, 6+/6s,6s+…
Unless Apple completely change their well-established numbering process, which seems highly unlikely.

When he said 7 he referred to the fact it was the next iphone not what the actual name was as nobody officially knows yet
