I desperately wanted an Abbey tools box but £1300 seems a tad much.

So I’ve resolved to make my own..

You having 2 sets of everything then or are all your cycle tools staying in there even if working in the garage ?

Very smart, what box are you using?

    @weeksy

I had an old tool box with bike specific kit that I had to raid around in to find what I needed.

I’ll have a generic tool board in the garage but a bike specific box all organised which pleases me greatly.

Not the sort of thing I’d do, but that looks incredibly satisfying.

@Merak Brilliant, cheers, will get one ordered. Was already putting one together but the case I was using had built in dividers.

Nice,I was using Shadow foam but want to get some layered stuff as well.

Get a deeper box and some pick foam rather than the layered stuff. Then you can just stand the tools on their ends and do it in one layer.

    Less instagramable though.

so basically youve taken a box and filled all the space you could have with tools with foam.

not a lot of tools in there for working away id suggest.

How do you get the bottom of the cut outs flat and neat?

The ex tech packer on the other thread said they cut all the way through the cut the “plug” short and poke it back in good face up.

I confess I don’t get it. I mean my tools are organised into two sets of shallow bisley filing drawers. I might foam some of them especially the spanners and the callibrated tools but layers would do my but in. Where do you put the top layers if you need something out the bottom?! The manky van floor? The valuable worktop space?

Cheers folks, it’s KS tools sliding T bars in the lid.

Cheaper than Facom, it’s the miserly Scot in me.

    Less than the Abbey one..

Incidentally that Topeak box @doomanic posted is good value for money imo. Never seen one of them before I likes it. Just not the cachet of an Abbey box or a home made one!

I have a Peli case similar to this that someone can have for £30 if close to Bath/Bristol:

I am not sure of the exact model, it is in my loft but can send pics if anyone is interested. It has the handle and wheels like the one in the link.

    PM me if interested

I use an old attaché case style tool box I had for a service tech job in the 90s. It was around £100 then from RS and has lots of clips and pockets for tools and some open trays. Works great for the bike tools but needs some repairs, when the weather warms up I’ll carbon fibre the cracks.

I have another for my current job and foam inserts would be a massive pain in the arse as tools change shape and type and regular use destroys the foam from past experience. Looks great but impractical for regular use in my opinion.
