Had a go on a Meta Quest 2 today and was blown away.

After the initial expense of about £300 how much does it cost?

Had an explore of the ISS and it was incredible.

Would be interested in flight sims and so on.

Original Quest here. Bit of a gimmick to start off with, but it kept me and the kids occupied during lockdown. I have Half Life Alyx on pc, which you play in vr. It’s creepy as.

Kids like Beat Sabre and Pistol Whip, and one of them is playing Monkey tag incessantly at the moment. The apps were all cheap and there’s a frequent 30% off voucher from Meta. Total spend is about £80 over the years.  Standalone is very useful and wireless too. Quite quick to charge and is pretty reliable. An hour is about the limit of comfort anyway.

Tempted by a Quest 2, but it was £300 on launch and the recent £100 off just takes the price back to that. Might have a …3 when they come out, or if I demo a ps5 version then that’s also a possibility. But considerably more ££.

Flight sims are something I don’t know about. I’ve tried a WW1 biplane thing, made me feel quite ill! But I bet Flight Sim x is something to behold if you can connect it to the right source.

Just the cost of the games really, assuming you’ve a PC up to the job already. you’d probably want a hotas for flight sim.

Value Index here. Don’t try sim racing in VR, it’s ace but I’ve probably spent about 5k on my SIM rig.

Got my meta quest 2 off vinted for £200. There’s loads on there because people get bored and/or motion sick very quickly. I wouldn’t bother buying a new one! Mine is in perfect nick.

Only ongoing cost is whatever games you want.

Beat sabre is great, I got angry birds and townscape for my daughter to play. I really want to get into a flight sim but I need to build up my tolerance for that.

There’s been some great moments with my daughter where she’s been learning stuff at school then come home and been able to visit the place in vr.

She also loved standing in the crowd at Tomorrowland and having a bit of a bop a long.

I don’t really want to think about how much my valve index +PC to drive it +flight sim rig cost all in. I built it up over a couple of years and I suspect I wouldn’t get much change out of £3k for it. But VR combat flight siming is intense – the first time I got into a proper dogfight it made my handa shake afterwards!

    I’m just thinking this for £15! 😉

Worth clarifying something – the Quest 2 is a standalone headset, it doesn’t need a PC to power it (but can be used with one). However if you’re using it standalone you’re limited to games you can get from the Quest app store. So you can buy a Quest for £300 and have no further cost other than the games.

If you want to use it for flight sims and don’t already have a gaming PC you’ll need to add that to the cost, which is probably going to be 2-3x the cost of the headset at least.

Yep, as above – Quest 2s hardware is limited, so to play flight sims you will need a hefty PC and connect the Quest via USB3.

@richardkennerley is that combat sim compatible with the headset alone, or do I need some mega PC to run it?

Forgive the daft questions, I know nothing about these .

I want a head set to float around the ISS and dog fight in WW2 fighter planes.

My mate has the Oculus Quest, not sure which version/model. It’s amazing. Uses as standalone, not hooked up to a pc. Currently plays a lot of table tennis on it, which is incredibly realistic.

He’s got that ww2 pacific fighter game on it. Had a go and enjoyed it. It’s hard though and got a bit of a crooked neck constantly looking above/behind me trying to work out where the heck those pesky japs were.

    You won’t get bored!

@harry_the_spider it’s compatible with the headset only. I think what the other posters above are referring to is much more true to life flight sim stuff, super high quality graphics. That warplanes game above is very much an arcade game, I think it will tick your box 👌

There’s <span style=”text-align: center;”>loads of games in the oculus store. It’s much like downloading apps and games to your phone.</span>

<span style=”text-align: center;”>See if you can download the meta quest app to your phone then you can search the store, see if there’s anything you fancy. Then get on vinted and see if there’s any bargains to be had! </span>

If you can, get one that comes with an aftermarket head strap, the standard one is rubbish.

Edit – not sure what’s going on with all that gubbins in my post!

Should add that he’s also got some kind of zombie shoot em up game. I dropped the gun and before I knew it the sods were all over me. I absolutely sh@t it and went into a crouch swinging punches all over the place. Needless to say I didn’t last very long. Came off it with heart rate pounding and in a right sweat.

He’s also got a great boxing game. In short they can be very good from an exercise point of view, but the brain is easily tricked into thinking zombies are real 😃

Yeah, just to confirm – all the apps you see on the Quest store will run stand alone on the headset.  Resident Evil 4 is stand alone and is a great game – that might be the zombie game.  Or the walking dead: saints and sinners.  Or Arizona sunshine 🤣

It’s just that some games like Call of Duty, flight sims, etc need to be run on a PC but output via the Quest.

Is this yet another headset question?
