Surprisingly enjoyable ‘popcorn’ films

Currently watching Midway on film 4.

Missed the first 90 minutes but enjoying it with a pint.

Bullshot (1983) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bullshot_(film) – I’ve yet to meet anyone outside of our family that has seen this. Probably watched it 100+ times as we lived abroad and this was ‘hilarious’ and we had a copy on VHS

Must have been a good 30 years ago but I’ve seen it, may be rose tinted spectacles but remember it being very funny, not sure I dare watch it again, probably awful 😀

I just watched the new Roadhouse last night, and sort of enjoyed it. But yeah, MacGregor is awful.

As for Tom Cruise, I’m actually forever surprised at his ability to project emotion. It only comes out once in awhile, but when it does, it’s actually good.

Just watched Days of Thunder and will add Cliffhanger I always enjoy that

I forgot about Cliffhanger! It’s a personal favourite as I saw it in the cinema the day after my stag ‘do’, and then signed up for a climbing course. A real inspiration, that one…

Some proper classics being mentioned here. Any potentially perilous situation in this house is soundtracked by Mr Kip or me crying ‘Teddy bear, nooooooo’ in slow mo with additional circling arms. Cliffhanger, great popcorn film.

I only saw Edge of Tomorrow recently and loved it, but I am sucker for a Tom Cruise and/or timey wimey film.

Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler Murder Mystery films are good craic too.

Its naff. I **** love it.

Thor Ragnarok – Silly comic book film but enjoyable and flows well. Cate Blanchett is brilliant.

Probably my second favourite of the Marvel movies after Winter Soldier. Only downside is that knowing a bit about the Avengers universe and the interplay between the various characters (including those not actually in this movie) in advance increases your enjoyment. But stop at this one,  Thor: Love and Thunder is ruinously poor.

As a side-note, any movie with Karl Urban in it is automatically watchable. OK, there are probably exceptions, but I can’t think of any.

Other suggestions – Pitch Black. Low budget, absolutely brilliant film.

Any 90s film with Antonio Banderas, Danny Trejo or Steve Buscemi, preferably all three as in Desperado. From Dusk till Dawn is a classic

All the Riddick films.

They have some great lines(maximum cheese) 😆

Yep, most stuff with him, pretty much anything with Jason Statham – all great candidates for some switch off and enjoy the silliness time.

Good calls for Evolution and Tremors as well – two films I’ll always watch if I see them on TV but would never go out of my way to find and stream. I’d chuck Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and Hot Fuzz into that mix too.

I was in Scotland last week.  On visiting Loch Sheil my brain did a Sean Connery movie crossover, “Glenfinnan… is a tourist attraction?”

A fair few Gerard Butler films come to my mind too. Love ‘Law abiding citizen’ and always enjoy the ‘** Has fallen’ series when they’re on the telly.

Found that recent update of Tremors on Netflix the other week, managed about 10 mins. utterly pants

There are quite a few films recommended here that didn’t really fly ‘under the radar.’

On the back of this thread, I rewatched Top Secret! yesterday.

A couple of giggle-worthy moments, but not as hilarious as I remembered.

Are District 9 and Chappie classed as popcorn films? I thought they were sci-fi B movies with a side of social commentary. Aren’t popcorn films the big summer tent pole movies? Thread is confusing me.

The adventures of Tintín from 2011 was a surprisingly good family popcorn film.

What was censored? I enjoyed it years ago, and am fairly certain that I watched it again a year or two ago and enjoyed it, but can’t remember thinking that something was missing.

It is an excellent film, and has a brilliant soundtrack, but I’d argue that it’s not a popcorn film in the sense of others on this thread. It’s too knowing, too well acted and too clever. And it has Joan Cusack, who is absolutely brilliant in a very good cast.

I thought a popcorn film was anything where you don’t have to use your brain – you just sit there and watch whilst suspending disbelief

watched Nobody tonight with my daughter for action movie night. Can’t believe we had missed that one.

Haha, this is always my first thought when there’s a “worst film you’ve ever seen” thread.

Does “popcorn film” just mean mass-market commercial kind of movies?

I’d also add my vote for the new Roadhouse plus the Transporter films, Blade, Bring It On, Pitch Perfect.

Demolition Man was an excellent shout, one of my favourite films full stop.
