Super fab glasses, or gimmicky junk?

I’m a sucker for a gimmick, so these seem appealing. At the same time I can see that this might be overpriced junk. A friend had something similar for SCUBA diving 10 years or so ago, and they seemed like magic then.

What does the collective genius of STW reckon?

I reckon I have enough trouble reading the terrain ahead without the distraction of a HUD in my field of vision

I’d be concerned as it’s Kickstarter you’d never get anything at the end. There are swimming goggles that have head up display so the basic technologies all sound feasible.

Gimmicky junk. But I am an old luddite and not the target market. Some of the youth might think all that info in your face might be good.

Will deliver a set of sports glasses with some cheap Android phone gaffa taped on about 5 years late!

Didn’t someone release some snowboarding goggles in the past that had a HUD on them? I think they showed things like direction, speed, ‘air time’, etc.

Personally I can’t think of anything worse than more gimmicky electronics while riding. But then I can’t stand riding with power meters, GPS, Strava and all that crap either. I hate everything being measured and really just enjoy riding as an escape (but that might just be me).

Also I’ve seen so many Kickstarter stuff either end up not being made, turning out to be crap or not getting any support as the company lasted 10 minutes.

And can you read the HUD when they’re steamed up, how sweat, dirt and grit proof are they?

Possibly the worst idea I’ve ever seen for eyewear. Each to their own though.

In some instances I can see that they’d be useful, and a long as the head up isn’t right in your field of view, then that sort of navigation (rather than having to look at the stem) might be safer, but I can’t see how it won’t be just as laggy as any other system if it uses the same GPS/GLONASS/Galileo that everyone else uses, and struggle off orad equally badly.

More for the roadies than than MTB?

I can’t imagine anything I’d like less. Perhaps if I was a roadie, I could see the appeal. Or on gravel perhaps. But on any kind of technical trail, this would be the total opposite of what I think is useful.

There are already HUD glasses on the market. DC Rainmaker reviewed some a few years ago. A quick Google suggests several manufacturers are at it, no need to go with Kickstarter.
