What’s best – hot air gun or chemicals?

Neither – old plane blade or blunt chisel.
    Just use the edge.

Most paint strippers are next to useless since 2010 (or 11?). The EU banned the active ingredient on H&S grounds. To be fair it was nasty stuff but very effective.

I would use a hot air gun. I used to use a blow torch, but the gas is expensive and you probably have an increased risk of burning down your house!
