  • Stolen numberplates – do I need to inform DVLA?

Some light-fingered scrote had the plates off my car, I’ve notified the police and my insurers but the insurance lady said I also need to advise the DVLA. Their lines are closed but do I need to let them know? It’s not like someone’s going to try and tax their car as mine, is it?

But they might try to use them to evade payment for fuel

They may be flashing past speed cameras with your plates on though.

You’ll ping every police car ANPR system for a while now. Please be patient with them, they’re only trying to catch the scrotes, not to annoy you repeatedly 🙂 (a point my mother in law could not grasp).

Why wouldn’t you tell the DVLA?

She may be cleverer than you think – you’d obviously put them up to it

Just email them, or even pop a letter in the post

These flashing lights on a white car behind me a getting annoyingly annoying.. I’m only doing 110 and texting me’ Julie, and every so often there’s a blinding flash as I go under the gantries…

The more time her car spends pulled over the better for everyone else.

I’m resigned to that, not a problem. 🙂

I can, when they’re open – just, why would they need to know? I’ll ping them an email. 🙂

She said to tell the DVLA, and to let them (the insurer) know what my new reg number is. So I’m not 100% her information is accurate, pretty sure they’re not going to give me a new reg…

Or you already have and it’s an elaborate ploy (-:

Dvla being keepers of the records matching plater to name and address can probably note the date and time of the theft and flag requests for your details from that date.
