I was looking to replace my now empty pot of Black Gold that I bought back in the late 90s and was horrified to discover that they don’t make it anymore. 🙁

Can anyone recommend a good alternative? Preferably red and smelly (almost like coffee but with a hint of petrochemicals…)

What do you need it for this stuff

Is great for o-rings and rear shocks and very sticky a little too sticky for front forks where slick honey is better.

What do you need it for

Mostly for greasing bearings, headsets, hubs etc.

Silkolene RG2 from your local motorcycle shop. Sticky, red, smells lovely and works fantastically on all mtb applications

The dura-ace grease is expensive but very good for hubs.

    Silkolene RG2

    +1

I bought a huge tub in 1997 after MBR recomended it for servicing Rockshox Indy forks! Still going strong, the forks themselves died shortly after…

I have a syringe of black gold grease bought from Hardisty Cycles (home of the mountain biiiiiike) from the mid-nineties. I keep losing it then finding it and it is seemingly bottomless.
do they not make it any more?

RG2 is red and pretty sticky, but just smells of grease.

Not as far as I can tell, the company still exists but they don’t seem to be into producing little tubs of grease anymore. Could be they still manufacture the stuff and sell under a different name but I couldn’t find any evidence of this online….
