  • Stainless steel pins in magnesium pedals … bad idea?

So I tried to replace the original pins in my DMR V12 mags with longer stainless steel ones. Ended up stripping the threads out of several of the holes.

I’d already replaced the pins in the normal V12s on my other bike without any issues, so I can only assume this was something to do with the mag ones being softer.

Should I have used aluminium pins, or is my technique to blame? I cleaned out the holes, added a blob of anti-seize to each one, started the screws off by hand, then used a 2mm hex bit and a sliding t-handle to spin them in. After a while I realised most of them were sticking out at odd angles.

Is it worth getting a tap and trying to rescue the pedals, or are they dead now?

Mag pedals may be softer but they shouldn’t strip when you “spin in” new pins – are you sure you didn’t apply some force?
