Do I need the long or medium cage SRAM GX mech for a 11-46 cassette?

    1x or 2x?

There’s a 1×11 GX mech and that only comes in long.

The 2×11 mech has option of medium or long.

Strangely the specs on SRAM’s site say max 42t for all of them.

Because they don’t make anything bigger than 42t (in 11spd)

    Ah good point 😀

I have Shimano freehubs so Shimano cassettes for me (much cheaper anyway). Gears always been SRAM though and considering GX or X1 mech myself. Question then is would they cope with an 11-46? I may just go with 11-42 though anyway.

    … Probably …

I’ve stuck with 42 simply because my ‘good’ wheels run proper 10-42 cassettes, so to save chain length being an issue with wheel swaps I just run max 42t.

Interesting how SRAM here are the other way round for mech sizes though, Shimano 11sp stuff is GS (med) for 1x and SGS (long) for everything else – because of the need for more chain capacity.

TBPH, I suspect that ‘long’ and ‘medium’ are different lengths on the 2x and 1x GX mechs. I always thought the 2x GX mech looked more like a regular 10s Type 2.0 rather than an XHorizon – quite a different mech.
