Sram Guide R vs Code R

As above, both my bikes have Guide R’s on them – with 200mm front discs and then one has a 180mm rear and the other 160mm.

Randomly bid on a new Code R that was on eBay and won it – for the front. So I’m going to stick it on the big bike and keep the Guide at the back until I come across a bargain rear Code R to match.

My question is around power of Code vs Guide – am I likely to notice a big difference?

Both the Guide and the Code are new style with bleeding edge callipers.

While not in the same league as the Code RSC in terms of power, lever feel or pad clearance, it’s still poo loads better than a Guide R.

Is there really any difference in power between the r and rsc Code? Isn’t the only difference the swinglink / contact point adjustment / more machining on the brake caliper?

The main thing is it’s more powerful than the guide though – otherwise it’s a pointless swap!

I imagine you’ll find it to be a lot more powerful! I went from Guide RSC to Guide RE (which is old Code caliper on Guide lever) and that was a noticeable increase, and have just gone from the Guide RE to Code R on my new bike, and it’s a noticeable increase again.

I’ve got both. Codes p*ss all over guides in my opinion! Codes also handle different weather better imo.

I’m liking what I’m hearing – can’t wait for it to arrive now and get it bolted on!

I love my Code RSCs, I reckon the only brakes that are either comparable or better would be the Cura 4′ or the new monster Trickstuff DH brakes that the blingwhore tomhoward has on order 😀

The Codes shit all over the Hopes, Shimanos and Formulas that I’ve had in terms of power and feel – can’t really comment on the reliability yet. But the stock pads wear a bit quick and are a bit noisey, best upgraded to Trickstuff, Galfer Pro or Race Matric pads.

Unlike others, I’ve found them a bit of a bitch to bleed compared to Hope and Shimanos though.

I just bled my front Guide r and put new race matrix pads in it – then spotted the Code I’m going to replace it with lol. I find bleeding is ok with sram – better than the Magura rim brakesnive has before. Never bled any other brand of brake to compare Sram too.

I like the bleeding edge thing – shame they couldn’t whack one of those ports on the lever as well so you didn’t get any fluid coming out when you take the syringe off at the end.

Guess when the standard Code pads wear out I’ll probably stick race matrix pads in to replace them as I’ve always found them pretty good.

You’ll like the Codes, make sure to get the lever feeling really solid. Proper confidence inspiring brake, I **** tortured them out in the alps – not a goddamn murmur from them in terms of fade or fluid boil.

I thought S stood for Servo something which was something power related?

I thought the S stood for swinglink (and the C for contact point adjustment)-
Which in my mind was more around modulation – accelerating the pads quicker towards the disc the more you pull on them. So more progressive modulation. Maybe it also increases power?
