PITA to work on. To change the starter motor you had to take the exhaust off. Everything was located on one side of the engine, full on one side & nowt on the other.
My mate had a green shitette when we were at school, used to drive like a nutter in it as 17 year olds did, eventually crashed it into the back of a massive (stationary) lorry on a slip road, that was that. Got a Hillman Hunter GLS after that.
I had a shuv-it like that for my first car in metaliccish green, 1.3 Automatic bought from auction for £300. It once stalled in a flood but served me well. Not a patch on my subsequent Volvo 340 however, that was a proper car.
We were once at Oulton Park. A Chevette saloon turned up in a very matt but original dark red paint. The guy swapped wheels for something very skinny and presumably bald. He then went on the drift track and did the lowest speed but most precise driving out of anyone there.
My first company car was a red three door, was very basic, but practical (nobody would want to nick it.)
Used as an office hack and apparently came to an untimely end in a crash on Sauchihall Hall St.
My first car was a Chevette in Dysentery Beige. Absolutely loved it. Pair of hifi speakers in the boot and a cheapass £40 stereo banging out Fat Of The Land on the way to college. Ended up killing it by “rallying” on a really unsuitable dirt road between Wyming Brook and the A57, although it did still manage to get me home somehow. I’d have another in a heartbeat.
I had a baby blue version of that without the nice wheels. There was so much rust in the boot floor. Only car I have ever had broken into. I fitted a stereo and some **** put a brick through the window to nick it. Still brings back some nice memories too.
I’d like to mock, but I secretly want a Viva. My grandad had one and I just love the shape, like a tiny muscle car. (and there was an australian version with a smallblock in it…)
My first car was a Chevette in YELLOW, GLS no less 🤣
A year or so later myself and my mates started buying hothatches (back when 18 year olds could insure them).
One of of them got a MK2 escort RS2000 and another bought a Chevette HS. If I’m being honest they where both not great cars to drive or own (especially the HS as I recall) compared to the GTE/XR/GTi’s etc.
Eventually they gave up on them breaking down and not great to drive in the wet and joined us “boy racers”.
I now take great delight in sending them copies every one that now comes up for sale at prices over £30 to £40K.
When I was 17 one of my mates bought a HS. Was a bit of a dog but christ, it was the fastest thing any of us had sat in – plus extra comedy bruising on the passenger’s leg when the driver put his foot down and the engine rocked by about 45 degrees
My mates mum had one in white. At least I think that’s what colour it was, there was more rust and filler than actual metal.
What amazes me more than anything is that shitbox can’t have been more than 7 years old at the time and it was a wreck. My present cars are 10 and 11 years old and neither has a hint of tinworm.
I had a Chevette, loved the shape, loads of room in the back, really enjoyed owning it, would have loved an HS with the 2.3 slant-four motor.
Even better, and similar vintage and underpinnings, there’s always one of these:
Or one of these:
I owned one for several years, until engine issues and a rotten floor put paid to it, sadly. Absolutely loved it, like a compact Camaro, if I had the money I’d buy another and put a small but pokey motor in it, like the Vauxhall 1.4 Turbo, with upgraded suspension and brakes, with modern tyres, a fun, attractive little car.
I had a pair of big Pioneer speakers in the rear shelf, which was a steel sheet; mounted underneath with holes cut in the steel and cloth over the top, the sound was fantastic, with amazing bass, but no clues from the outside. I had a Pioneer component system providing sounds, from metal and chrome tapes, 12” singles recorded from my Logik turntable. I miss that car. 🙁
I had a Kadett when I was 18, superb cars
I bought another one some years later and still have it
sub 800kg RWD, LSD, 220hp supercharged 16v
Like a works tarmac rally car, with less weight and reliable.
one day it’ll be finished 😉
