Pretty sure nobody’s mentioned the late, great Jaco Pastorius.

I’m not 100% sure this qualifies (starts with guitar before the bass kicks in and the intro is short) but it’s what popped into my head:

Not crawling through 6 pages, but if no-one’s mentioned Rancid yet, shame on you all (and if theyhave, good call).

This whole album is full of amazing bass lines but this is the track where it kicks in first

So heavy without just being metal, savage raspy tone and never losing the swaggering groove. It’s my favourite RATM album.

How did I miss this thread…

    Anyone done Debaser yet?

Pretty sure nobody’s posted this yet, possibly one of my favourite Floyd pieces.

And Chris Squire, an astonishing bass player, I always find myself listening to his bass playing in particular whenever I play any Yes stuff.

    How it started…

Same riff on bass and guitar. Counts.

Must’ve been posted before, possibly by me as part of the tiny desk set. Superb bass into, virtuoso middle break and jaw dropper outro all put in the shade of that groove…

No idea if its already been mentioned but Frankie Vallie’s The Night has a glorious bassline.

A slightly sidewise entry, but up there with my favourite intro’s of all time.

pretty basic but an iconic bass intro….

    How about some Harry Nilson

Technically I guess the drums are first and it’s very short but its a great little riff and its nice a present in the mix right through the song.

And also has someone said NIB. Might even have been me!

Technically not an outstanding bass intro I’m guessing that former session bassist Scott Walker is the one riffing away.

I’m pretty sure the intro was recorded with a regular 6 string guitar and the ‘dusty end’ of a bass guitar (both heavily distorted).

Damn, how could I have forgotten Psycho Killer! I saw them on that tour, as well, supported by Dire Straits. Chris Franz and Tina Weymouth are one of the great rhythm sections.

I don’t think this has been posted yet, it popped up on shuffle this morning prompting a certain amount of head banging while trying to do despatch checks on cars. I remember watching the video on a late-night MTV programme and it just blew me away.
    Incredible band and amazing musicians.
