So…who’s going to be our next PM?

Oldmanmtb I don’t think there are any options under any idealogy short of the far lefts lets just print some more money. To some extent weve already done that, the pound has tanked and we’re even worse off.
There’s only one way out of this and it’s rejoining the EU in stages. Even then though we will never get the same standard of deal Thatcher negotiated with the generous rebates etc.
I think austerity is a given, the only bit of schadenfreude is that biggest impact will be on one of the socio economic groups that really supported Brexit. They had a serious decision to make, they choose poorly for bad reasons.
Unfortunately thus group is still holding the country to ransom, Starmer needs the red wall gammons back to have a chance of firming a government do his hands are tied regarding the single market etc.
We are all in for a rough time, some more than others.
Posted 6 months agointhebordersFree MemberOption 1 (retrenchment) – Low tax, low wage, low regulation, reduced public services (Thatcherism) = Fiscal Conservative small government = poor people get even poorer – yes its possible
Option 2 – there isn’t an option 2 in the Tory ideology.
Yep, I remember when my granny realised that Thatcherism wasn’t the conservative ‘values’ she’d voted for all her life – god knows what she’d think of this lot, but then she grew up on the 30’s so would probably see ‘parallels’…
After the 2019 GE I pointed out to a friend that folk had voted for Option 1, just that the majority didn’t realise.

No, he would be then called Tom Throwenhat. 😉
Posted 6 months agoNewRetroTomFull MemberApparently Ben Wallace set a record for the biggest bar bill at the Scots Guards officer’s mess. Not sure if that qualifies him to be a good PM or not?
Posted 6 months agoMounty_73Full MemberI’m just pleased Gove isnt running for PM, I cant stand the sight and sound of that man!
He’s a SNAKE!!! 😉

Did he pay it himself or did he wangle it on expenses?
Although tbh whichever it was I would still be pretty impressed.

Over the next six weeks I will be available to promise you the moon on a stick. Ask and it shall be yours.
Let me worry about how I deal with three chancellors and a cabinet of 160. It is having the answers to those questions that makes me the most suitable candidate.

fazziniFull MemberDid Steve Baker really say in his interview with the BBC last night “…seize power…”? I may have mis-heard or taken completely out of context (was flicking channels as England lost another wicket in their T20 drubbing 😂), but if not, I am very terrified now!

I just wrote a long list for you but didn’t realise the forum had logged me out and it disappeared when I hit submit. I’ll take that as an omen that this isn’t the thread for that.

Hahaha, no love lost there.
Posted 6 months agochakapingFree MemberPolitico has reported that Priti Patel is considering a run.
Obviously it’d be more surprising if she wasn’t thinking about it, but it’s still a chilling prospect.

Or am I conflating threads?welshfarmerFull MemberI must say, a quick skim of the Wiki entry for Tom Tugendhat puts him out front in the eyes of this floating voter (i’ve been known to vote Tory, Labour, Lib Dem, Green and Plaid Cymru over the past 37 odd years!). Let’s see what the papers say about him as that will be a better indication as to whether he is a suitable candidate.

Posted 6 months agomrmonkfingerFree MemberWhat stumpyjon said. Mordaunt and Wallace seem vaguely capable, but as early favourites they’ll not be anywhere near the top by the end. I fear we’re in for another Brexit halfwit.
Then we might get a GE. With maybe enough red wall new blue voters having died off or given up on the brexit bullplop and maybe voting labour again. With maybe a policy of back-into-the-EU-bit-by-bit.
Our democracy is poisonous. The real poison chalice was the UK getting on board with vanilla FPTP, two centuries ago.
Posted 6 months agomonkeyboyjcFull MemberSuella Braverman is my parents ‘local’ MP, they generally only have bad things to say of her now that she’s been there a while – her human rights and welfare voting history makes Priti Patel look saintly.

Posted 6 months agooldmanmtb2Free MemberJust to follow up on my post further back, i have had a good look around the mad and sensible options for the UK economy going forward… its not great if you are unskilled poorly educated etc.
Even the mad deregulation elements are concluding that they may actually end up with nothing to deregulate.
What is interesting is that the economy (primarily London) has a lot of money in the system and a lot of inertia so this is like a very big flywheel and it may simply take a long time to slow down. This theory makes a lot of sense and explains much about our Country, this also explains why the economy is slowly going downhill rather than off a cliff. This is in sharp contrast to the late 70s when the economy only had a fraction of that cash and inertia – there was little flywheel.
Interesting if worrying… unmanaged decline if you like.
Posted 6 months agooldmanmtb2Free MemberJust talking to an acquaintance and yhey think that the redwalls are heading down the “slowly boiling the frog” route.
Again fits the flywheel model.

Must be a different Sunak if this one is the competent one.
Looking at the line-up for Tory chancers is like an special edition of the Monster Munch crisp mob.

I read an article very recently about her, and I knew nothing about her before that, that effectively described her as Trump in a frock. A truly scary thought in oh, so many ways! 😱
