mine is a 1998 mazda MX-5. First of the fixed headlight Mk2 version, 1.6 and sadly no slippy diff. Currently on sorn, MOT ran out and it is rusted underneath like something you just pulled out of a lake.

It only cost me about a tenner in insurance, so currently it is just sitting on the drive with a flat battery while I’m contemplating what to do with it. The welding work would cost £1000+ and the car is worth about £500 at the moment.

Anybody wants to buy themselves a nice little project let me know 😀

    Triathlons.

Did Ironman Wales last year. By the time I’d paid the entry fee, a hotel for the weekend, and a weekends worth of food for me and the missis, plus replacing kit that I wore out doing the long training, and the couple of weekends there for course recces, turned out almost £2500 for the one race!

Then there were the build up races.

Then the brownie point gaining treats.

er… my business. Something I’d been aspiring to do for a good few years, but I took the leap a couple of years ago and frankly if the other half didn’t have a good job we’d be struggling… Beyond that, a small dog’s medical bills.

I’m idly pondering buying an old banger of a car as a project though, because you can never burn through too much money…

Why not turn it into one of these:

    MEV Exocet

    Or one of these:

Peak bike was achieved pre MLC and is now on the decline……I’ve probably no more than 20 now🙄.

Passed my motorcycle test in May after a lifetime of threatening too and have an old runner and a cash pit project waiting to be started. Next year will probably see the old runner traded in for something newer.

Also bought a snowboard last year and booked a holiday after more or less a 20 year hiatus.

So one reliving my youth and the other something I always meant to do when I was young.

@bikebouy – yep it was ace. 45mph winds, sideways rain, one of the toughest courses on the ironman circuit made even tougher.

    Worth it for sure.

The support all round the course is bonkers. We went to support this year as it is so good.

Snap. I was 45 when we had an unexpected addition to our now grown up family. And 50 when the next unexpected came along.

I haven’t figured out what caused it yet, but now that batch have grown up too, I live in fear of a recurrence…

So didn’t have time for a mid-life crisis, maybe I should do it now. 🙂

    40 next year.

Daughter is 18 and just started uni.

I have six pushbikes, currently approximately 12 motor vehicles (including two camper vans), a penchant for going away walking/cycling and sleeping in cars/vans, a taste for fine food and something else….between all of these a few £ gets spent.

Sometimes feel like decluttering, having one motor vehicle (would necessitate another job), two or three bikes, getting a dog and taking up Hillwalking and wildcamping.

I could throw a curve ball by asking the GF to marry me and buying a house with her.

My lovely Mazda MX5 (2007 Mk3 with the folding hardtop) has been a fairly low maintenance until Saturday when a muppet on a Piaggio rode straight into me coming down the wrong way of a street to avoid queuing. Garage man came and took it away today and left me with a new Citroen C3, hateful thing, I think the steering wheel is connected to the wheels with Brie.

Waiting for the assessor’s phone call in the next day or two to see if it’s a fixer or a write off, it’ll need a nose and a wing at least, but I don’t know if the shell is bent enough to kill it. Nobody hurt though, so I might be shopping for another soon, love the simplicity of that car, and the way it just keeps going and doesn’t rust like the Mk1s and 2s. Sorry about your’s vt612, they are easy to get attached to.

As for Money Pit, after this week storm, we’ve got the roofer on standby again for when the winds drop, 7 bedroom Victorian Gothic Villa overlooking lovely 92 acres of park?   Indian burial ground would have been less hassle.

Money Pit 2, 2nd daughter just got her accommodation allocation for Uni. Notting Bloody Hill. Daddy, can you do a bank transfer?

1987 911 – air cooled, guards red, targa (same as the picture I had on my wall as a kid).  Theoretically bought pre-mid life crisis and kept for a couple of years until i realised that keeping a car with this level of rust proofing (basically none) outside, wasn’t a good idea.  It was generally a reliable car, but if something did need doing then the big flashing money pit light came on brightly

For my 40th, I did the Outlaw triathlon – didn’t cost me £2500 though

I did the ‘sportscar’ thing pre-MLC. I built a Lotus-Seven-Inspired kitcar in 2005. It’s still in the garage and I still love it.

After that I’ve done ‘cycling’ to the point now I have two MTB and two road bikes. That’s enough of that – I intend to keep riding them all as much as possible.

Next thing; Trials Bike riding (with an engine). I have an old British motorbike (1960 Excelsior) which I’m going to sell and then use the cash to pick up a cheap Trials bike.

@dirkpitt74 thanks, I knew about the exocet, looks good on paper 🙂 In reality they cost as much as a good car alone, and as my garage is full of crap and bikes so the MX5 lives on the drive. I wouldn’t want to keep an exo out there long term…

    @midlifecrashes
careful though, the Mk3 can be just as bad for rust. I`d consider preventive measures like full underseal even if yours look OK right now.

Just purchased an 11 year old KTM 950 SMR, it’s lovely BUT it will need a specialist full service, the water pump mod (they all fail apparently) and a spare regulator as well as a new slave cylinder (they all fail apparently).  Oh and I may have got into a bidding war for a pair of baby robin, window shattering akrapovic end cans……

oh and a fleet of bicycles including Mrs M’s.

    A Lambretta – 1970’s Italian loveleyness.

I’m only in my twenties still, does that count as a MLC!?

*Edit, actually two, but one’s 60’s and Spanish.

I’m 56 now and can it be called a “midlife crisis” but mine has been my car, a VW Golf Mk6 R. I went for the Mk6 as there’s so many Mk7’s due to the PCP deals and I actually prefer the looks of the 6 over the 7 and mines a lovely 3 door in silver that I’ve fitted OZ wheels to, currently running a custom Stage 1 tune, Revo Intake and Miltek Cat Back exhaust, plus some Bilstein B14’s that have been lowered by 20mm front and 30mm rear for a nice stance and it handles far far better now too. Going Stage 2+ next with a Wagner Intercooler and APR HPFP it’ll be pushing almost 400bhp hopefully.

I love the car, it’s a bit individual and does everything I want from it. Stonking performance and still economical too which is a blessing. I don’t have to worry about running costs as I’m financially fine and so it’s a toy I don’t mind spending money on. I’ve got other toys like expensive watches, loads of camera gear and exotic hi-fi but the car is the one that makes me smile the most.

    @Richardk – I did Outlaw for my 50th 😎

Yep, was much cheaper as I only lived over the border in Belper so it was just a day out 😀

Quite fancy it again, but I’m looking for something…err….a bit longer now.

    nice Prsche btw 😎

    Bikes and triathlons.

I also did the outlaw half and full ironman for my 50th (although I was 49) – its a real shock when they put you in the “Senior Veterans” category..When did that happen…….?

The rule with Bikes now is one in one out – contemplating a new bike 2nd gravel – carbon or Ti ?

Does spending £500 for a weekend canoeing in the highlands count?  ( £300 to hire the suv that I could put the canoe on, £50 for the canoe, rest on petrol and food and stuff.)

Sounds boring next to all your sports cars, motorbikes, guitars and yachts, but just a very steady succession of well-priced, high-quality MTBs with slightly differing geometry and suspension characteristics. Not to mention wheel size and axle widths.

Probably had the debauched version of the MLC in my 30s.

But I guess my 40's were defined by my Land Rovers and offroading/overlanding...

First off I built this one and raced it for a while,
then I bought this as a project and completely rebuilt it onto a new chassis.
Then had many years of problem free driving in her. Currently having a rest in the shed.

Just bought a 400 sq ft timber garage/shed s/h but now need to put down a slab, on a sloping site. So project to build and then planning to do a kit car or maybe TVR S series (pretty much a kit car).

I’m not sure I had any until I opened this thread 🙂

Sold our MX5 (3.5) to fund a car for the offspring. Bought a few guitars in my 20s even tho I was never going to improve beyond ‘absolutely useless. Sold my last motorbike (single sided Ducati 916) when we had our first kid. Have continued to spend stupid amounts of money on bikes and don’t regret a single penny of that. It’s brought me friends, happiness, amazing memories and hopefully many more adventures to come.

I reckon its’ going to be holidays. So many places we want to go and hopefully the 17/19 year olds won’t want to come anymore. Sadly this has yet to come to pass.

I’d like a project tho. Dunno what as I’m rubbish at building/fixing/understanding anything vaguely complex.

Erm… not quite as exciting as all the above but mine is….

giving up a 12 yr, relatively well paid job in IT for a mega global Corp and studying medicine for 4 yrs.

It’s going to cost me at least £70k ..
